Bounty Hunting: Viper, or Cobra?

Okay, so first post here! This questing has been on my mind for a bit now. For Bounty Hunting, should I use the Cobra, or Viper? The Cobra is faster than the Viper, while boosting, which would allow it to simply gain distance, then turn around and face the Viper head on. Would the Viper's shields win out there anyways? They seem to have very similar maneuverability... and the Cobra's other benefits such as jump range and fuel are quite appealing.

So which should I use in bounty hunting?

Thanks.

Easy. Cobra. Providing you can outfit it to A rating (power plant, distributor, beams, shields, thrusters), beats the viper every time.

Counterargument: Easy; Viper. It's faster, with better shields and can totally out-turn a cobra while presenting a smaller target silhouette. If you're just looking to kill, the Viper will do it better for cheaper.

Nothing can outrun you so you can always escape, and always catch your prey if they try to run.

No competition, had both, used extensively, Cobra wins it very easily hands down.

Well that was productive.

Well, in honesty, they both have pros and cons for this application. You have to weigh them and ask yourself which appeals to you the most.

Although, outside of bounty hunting, the Cobra is far superior and so, if you like the ship and later want to change role, then the Cobra could have a longer lifespan. But if BHing is just stepping stone to the ship you really want, then that's less relevant...

Agreed but one correction to your previous post. The Cobra is the fastest ship in the game - with A rated boosters and power you 440KM/S+ top boost which means you outrun everything and can catch up with the Viper ;) In beta the Viper was king but it got nerfed for Beta 2.

The sound of the Viper makes it the winner in my mind. I don't care what wins if one is more fun for me to fly. The canopy seems to resist shattering better as well. My poor Cobra canopy never lasted long in a fight.

Whichever you prefer to fly. (That's my real answer.)

Otherwise it depends what you're doing. In PvP I'd go for the Cobra because you can run if outmatched, otherwise it's fairly even although the Viper is cheaper and has somewhat better shields.

In the end, it all comes down to your combat style. I found I frequently took down targets faster with a Viper, while they more rarely got to escape with the Cobra and these are my experiences since launch.

The reason it works that way for me, is that on both ships I prefer to put a couple of straight beams in the slots close to the cockpit for easy aim, while I place a couple of Gimballed Multi-cannons under the ship. On The Viper, that means I have C1 Beams and C2 GMCs. C1 Beams still take down shields pretty fast and C2 GMCs do actually do some real damage once the shields are down.

On the Cobra those numbers get reversed, with C2 Beams and C1 GMCs. The Beams really cut down shields quickly then, but once the shields are down, the C1 GMCs just don't do much damage and keeping Beams and guns on target to take it down, does get your power to drain quickly. Ofc there are other options, those are just the weapons I feel most at home with. Like I said; a matter of combat style.

Viper is slower, even though that's ridiculous.

The Viper all day, every day. Better acceleration, better yaw, MUCH more capable when combined with FA/Off, better shields, and hardpoints that overall are more conducive to fixed weapons.

Cobra > Viper - Piracy
Viper > Cobra - Bounty Hunting

Viper all the way. Viper is much tougher. Cobra doesn't take a good beating at all and has a canopy made of sugar. Power management might put you off but you need to learn sometime. 2 mil gets you a double hard viper.

Its the Viper for me.
Only had for a week or so, but I have lost count of the Cobra's who I have burned in a dog fight.

Ive fought in all the ships all the way up to my current clipper. If my ONLY task was to kill another ship, and I had to pick between the two... it would be the viper, as statistically it is better in that one regard, if all others are cast aside. It's more maneuverable, and has superior hardpoint placement. All else being completely equal, pilot skill and all, viper will beat a cobra 1on1.
