Newcomer / Intro Bounty Hunting: Why didn't my reputation increase?

Hey all,

I was under the impression that turning in bounties would increase your reputation with the minor factions and any major factions they are associated with. However, after turning in a few bounties, my reputation is not showing the blue increase arrow next to the faction names. It is still showing a red arrow. I had abandoned a couple of difficult bounty missions previously but, otherwise, have done nothing negative.

Why is is that the arrow is still red? Shouldn't it show blue once I turned in bounties for them?

Thanks.

Edit: After doing some more bounty hunting, it eventually turned blue. So, I'm a bit curious as to what that arrow actually means. I thought it meant just your most recent action (as in only the last one) since I have seen it disappear before... Is it then just all your most recent actions together?

The arrow is the total of recent changes. What counts as recent is vague, so it is a vague indicator. Don't get hung up on it.

Agree with Dommarraa - it's all very vague. Intentional, as FDev states.

First of all, it's important that we talk about the same thing here. You certainly understand the difference between reputation (your relationship with a minor faction) and influence (the political weight a minor faction has locally in this system).
Reputation changes (arrows) are updated within minutes, and certainly with any instancing change (e.g. hyperjump).
As Dommarraa said, it's a sum of all the recent factors:
- the regular effect of 'returning to the mean', i.e., if you are at an extreme rep like hostile or allied, you slowy return to unfriendly or friendly, respectively
- abandoning or even failing missions have a significantly bigger negative impact (on rep, not on influence any more) than succeeding in that mission
- doing missions and handing them in
- delivering combat bonds, bounty hunting vouchers (effect on the minor factions that 'own' them)
- selling exploration data and trading (effect on faction controlling that station)

So, you can now guess yourself how you exactly came to this rep change :).

I always get confused with rep, sometimes red arrows appear sudddenly then I realize I shot a wanted ship of that faction or did a mission that made me friendly with one faction and unfriendly with another. I always choose missions that give me rep+ with major factions (emp/fed/all) to get those rank missions and ignore the others unless profitable.
