The way I understand it, bounty boards tell you the name and location of people with the highest bounties on their head in the area. They give you a list of wanted criminals, not of bounty hunters.

I "think" the top 5 bounties are not on the top bounties collected by bounty hunters, but instead are the current amounts of reward bounties for 'wanted' criminals.

Top bounty is the most wanted criminal.

I'm not sure about that. I recognised a CMDRs name on the bounty board (the illustrious Blue Falcon ).
Maybe the OP means HE/SHE has the bounty on their head?

I've seen mention of the "bounty top 5" in some gamma change log or ED newsletter, but I'm still puzzled where on Earth (or in the Galaxy, for that matter) it can actually be found?

It is in the galnet news section on the front page (right hand side) of the station services. Not all stations have a wanted list (yes OP, it is a top 5 Wanted, so bounty hunters know where to go - not a bragging list for bounty hunters - amazing you thought otherwise)

Had a fun encounter in SOL earlier. Was cruising around in my asp when I spotted a commander name I saw earlier. Turns out, it is the leader of the bounty list with a tidy 500k to its name. I lost him, found him again and successfully interdicted him. Back in realspace, I could not even finish scanning him before he opened fire (I had a small bounty myself). I switched to weapons and (I swear I did not do it on purpose) and we crashed into each other upon the initial run.
Sadly, that is where the story ends, as his viper was no match for the 6B shields I had and his death by crashing barely dented my shields.
I would have preferred a proper fight, but it was exciting nevertheless.

But I did get the 500k in bounties!

All the bounty top 5 I have ever seen have got CMDR in front of their name. So I take it they are real meatspace fliers...

I feel - The bounty board should only list (bounties) in the local system and directly connecting systems. (one (1) jump)

Definitely all real players, all were CMDR something or other.

My bad on thinking the bounty was the other way around.

Going to have to get a frame shift scanner I think.

So.. if these are real flesh and blood commanders, the only way to find them is to stumble across them on accident right? How else are you gonna find them with our multiverses and soloverses?
