Boy that's pretty tacky. C'mon FD!

Recently bought a second Cmdr account to focus on combat. My other is for trading, mining, exploring.
Anyway second combat-only career is going well and today I get an email from FD saying that since I "graduated" from Pilots Academy I get a free Sidewinder Skin for this account.

Bought the discounted Commanders Edition (which comes with Sidewinder Skins) plus I hate the Sidewinder and try my best to quickly get another ship...any ship.

But a free Skin is a free Skin so I respond to the email and it says I can claim my Skin AFTER I post my ED game "Pilots Academy graduation" on Facebook or Tweet it.
I don't do either but even if I did...really FD? My game graduation on my "social media"'accounts?

I'm a ED slappy but you can keep the Skin thank you very much.

Scam?
It's a brand new email account used only for my second ED career and nothing else.
Plus they had my real name which only FD has. Email account under a bogus name.
And it certainly looked "official" and all links led back to FD's servers.
Lemme go back and look at it again. I will be curious how this transpired if a scam.

EDIT: Sure looks legit FWIW...

Some searching suggests that there has been both legitimate and phishing versions of this. Sounds like you've got the legitimate one.

For what it's worth, I absolutely loathe marketing which attempts to pressure you into using your social media accounts (not that I have any) for advertising. I don't really blame Frontier for doing it, since it seems most businesses are jumping on the bandwagon, but I still don't like it.

Thank you for the additional.
If this was a scam then FD's servers have been breached.
The only time my real name is used in anything is for payment to FD's billing department.
Still tacky FD...

Yeah, I find that gross myself. I'll post what I wanna post on any social media, and that's all.

Though I might post about a company trying to pressure me into posting free advertising up for them I guess.

Yeah agree.

I'd seen this rewarding new players with a skin thing in a recent post and thought it was very cool, I did not realise you had to promote ED on social media for it. Yes that is cheap.

Some people just don't want to use social media, and of those that do many don't really want to go promoting something for a "freebie", the typical demographic is not 14 years old with no self-respect.

If they had this when I was a new player I'd likely be Tweeting some swear word at Frontier with the same reaction as you - keep your bloody skin.

Especially when you have no option to decline it and still accept the item under the main reason you earned it.

Probably driven by the same ___________dev specialist trainee that keeps up those non optional jerk us from destination to destination missions.

Agreed. I knew that I had read on these forums about the phishing version of this, just can't find it right now (awake 31hrs - sorry guys).

In any event I completely agree that it is shoddy marketing to play this way, and absolutely do not support it. I don't even use anti-social media much beyond these forums, gave it up for Lent years ago.

I would fire off a polite email to Support just to be sure it isn't a scam, and to express your displeasure if it is legitimate.

Well, I don't know. If some viral marketing means Frontier can divert more of the money they have into game development I don't think it's really so bad. Maybe if all your social media accounts are business or personal, or you want to keep your naughty ED habit a secret from the world (just a joke) plus .. if you made a new email to get new Cmdr account, you could set up Your Commander's Account on that email and have some fun with it .. my day trucking in a CZ, in 120 characters or something.

I don't see any harm in it myself. The best advice I ever got as an amateur musician was, "don't be afraid to put your hand out." You'll probably see an ad when this come up too, but that's show bizniz;

If that is a legit email that is indeed pretty bad... boy does it make Frontier sound desperate.

I wouldn't do that for all the skins in the store (seriously).

Just going to add to the OP's sentiment.

I don't use Facebook or Twitter, and just generally loathe them both. Supposing I did use either I still wouldn't spam my contacts with useless garbage from a video game I wot played sometimes. I value their time more than that, let alone my own.

I concur. I'm one of those old folks who despise stick and carrot marketing, and will avoid companies because of it. Per the OP, it sounds like they congratulated him for his "prize", then set conditions for claiming that prize. Sorry, FD, that's phone-scammer tactics. Offer the prize up with the condition up-front, and all is on the up and up.

Your sitting there whining about have to post on twitter for a free skin? A pax skin no less. Grow up its called pr and advertisement, moves like this are what keep new customers coming into the game which means the game stays alive. It's not all about you, you know. They're basically saying "Hey, Please advertise the game for us on your social media, we'll give you something for the trouble" and your throwing a fit about it.

Yeah. Evil swines offering to give you something to make a post on facebook. They're no better than Hitler really.*

I mean I get that you don't want to do it. I wouldn't do it either and my failbook means so little to me that I can't even remember the last time I bothered logging into it. However this is 2017 and marketing strategies like this are so common that I'm amazed anybody can get worked up about them. Don't want to do it, don't do it and don't get the skin they were offering, who cares.

*Might as well take the thread to its logical conclusion and go full Godwin.

So make a disposable e-mail address, a bogus facebook profile, post their crap and delete both after you get what you want.

Valid suggestion is valid.

They offered a chrome Eagle skin to participants of a CG a couple weeks back. I just cashed it in and you guessed it no Chrome Eagle skin.
