So six months after order, my left handed Virpil Alpha stick is arriving in the next few days. Nothing like a long wait! It’d better be good.

This will give me twist back on my left side, if I want it (currently pitch and roll). I suspect that having learned to try out different control combos in fast succession relatively recently, it won’t be an issue to learn this minor amendment.

I also suspect that now I am proficient at FA Off, it won’t be hard to get back to where I am currently in terms of flying ability .

Somewhere along the line within this ‘changing my controllers’ experiment I got into FA Off.... I was given a nudge and I know who the culprits to blame are... ;) @Sanderling @Jay Le Chardon

So since starting to hoon in August - joined Newton's Gambit, utterly top bunch of chaps and chappesses - I thought I'd post this video as an update to an old thread.

Let's hope ED: Odyssey will preserve the planets with this type of landscape, it'll be a crying shame if we can't do some fast low level planetary canyon / surface flying.... looking at you, FDev!

I once stated on this thread I'd never get FA Off, and I was wrong. Just kept plugging away and flying with some super talented CMDRs at NG, Elite has never been more fun, and flying a "sim" has never been more fun and engaging than this, hands down.

@Ser Xav If your pedals have the toe axis (like CH pros), you can tie the toe axis on either pedal into one axis. This way you can control 2 different axis with your pedals allowing you to bypass twist sticks. I prefer lat thrusters on my left stick, yaw/rudder on my right stick, roll/vert thrusters on my pedals.

Love this - journey into FAoff and hoonin' around. Great vid mate - can't believe it's been this long, looking at the dates :)

This is pretty cool too. Just goes to show there's no 'meta' control scheme when it comes down to it - just what people are comfortable with, and there's a whole heap of variety.
I know one guy who flies with a stick and a sideways-mounted Xbox controller for left hand :)

I think the most important thing is finding what you're comfortable with, and then just focusing on improving with it continuously. It's unlikely anything else is gonna offer any significant benefit anyway.

This is an excellent result of just embracing the FA-off style and not letting a few minor setbacks stopping you. Well done mate!!

I would come out hooning more often with you lot but my Keelback would just look daft will all these eagles doing loops around it while I crash in slow motion!! :D

It’s really interesting hearing how different people approach the same issue of control schemes. Ultimately there is no ‘best’ way, there’s best ways for each person and their setup. I’ve now been through many control schemes in Elite, and had to adjust for each one. Although what I can say is that each change has been to a ‘better’ control scheme in that I’ve become more efficient and more precise.

I used to fly - pre FA Off days - using 2 axes on the rudder pedals, similar to what you suggest. I had toes for Lateral and Rudder for Verts. For me I found this too much of a contortion for some thrust combinations, so when I went to dual stick, I retained Verts on the rudder and redeployed Laterals to a stick.

Personally I’ve found separation of controls to be very beneficial, allows me to focus on each of the thruster ‘types’. I am fortunate in that I have many options with the kit I have, and I could ditch the pedals entirely and go pure dual twists sticks, but this has many axes all together. Now obviously some will say pure dual twist sticks is a good thing, and for them it is. But what I’ve observed in Elite and in particular with the FA Off ‘community’ is that there are as many controls schemes as there are CMDRs.

Muscle memory is an interesting thing as it allows your brain to translate combinations of moves transparently. I used to fly Yaw on my primary stick with roll and verts - swore by it - whereas now my Yaw is on a stick with Laterals. Both make ‘intrinsic’ sense, just that now my style makes sense to combine Yaw moves with Lateral moves as I find this most efficient, and for me this efficiency is the result of separation of controls. Roll and Pitch are independent and I’m actually the better for it I think.

This is an excellent result of just embracing the FA-off style and not letting a few minor setbacks stopping you.

Thanks mate, your description of ‘the FA-Off style’ makes it sounds like some obscure Kung -Fu......lol! And bring the Keelie!

Yes feels like only yesterday you were patiently showing me the basics so big thanks to you. It certainly has been a journey.... long way to go yet though - that’s what I love about this form of flying. So much depth and complexity, yet also very pure.

I told you I got a Keelback a few weeks ago... FA Off in heavy ships is fun. Lots of weight to manhandle around like a dainty ballerina.
