Brain trees - new bug, or colonization is harming them?

Hi commanders,

I started to run low on raw materials G4, so I went on a brain tree harvesting session.

I first visited system Synuefe FS-X b48-1, planet A 1 a, to stock up on Tellurium.
Identified the Phloem Excretions, shot them, and collected the G4 mat. Good.

I then went to HR 3230, 3 a a, for the Selenium.
Good surprise, I notice an outpost there (built by a commander, I suppose), as well as some points of interest such as RES's.
Bad surprise, my usual tree patches, as well as any trees in between, have now only Polyporous Growths...WTH???
Consolation, some of them contain the G4 mat...but man, I had to shoot all of them to check their contents (they all look the same!) and I am now hostile with the Brain Tree faction (this is a joke).

Is this a bug or a feature?

PS: the good news is that I am now an expert at harvesting the trees...my Head Tracker helped a lot to select what to shoot and what to collect with a movement of my head :)

Sounds like this known issue

Though in the case of selenium, I don't think you necessarily require phloem excretions, since I've definitely got it from polyporous growths in the past.
It was just way easier/faster to get them from the excretions, since you could identify them either visually or in the contact panel.
It definitely used to work for me a few weeks ago, and I must have been there previously at least 3 times.

I've personally had more success in the brain tree farming by flying to a different area through supercruise (either a teal colored or spotty one), rather than mess with options, but cannot say why this happened to work for me. It also wasn't always reliable either.

Bit of an aside... my ears are burning here... but isn't selenium some odd "G4 but not G4" in terms of what it drops from? That is, it doesn't drop like other G4s, and instead drops like a G3 (and so is in competition with other G3s from sources of G3, which is less commonly polyporous growths?)

It drops like a G2 to my knowledge, hence why you can get it from the polyporous growths which are G2 materials. The G3 drops on brain trees come from something called a "mussidaen seed pod"(if I recall the name correctly)... and don't ask me what that is. I don't have the slightest clue.

Yeh cool... main gist I was hitting was it doesn't drop like a G4. Thanks for confirming :)

I'm pretty sure I did collect Selenium not long ago, it had to do like for the other raw mats and shoot the Phloem Excretions. I could be wrong though, who knows.
I also know that FDev changed the mat to G4 in an update.

Also, the strange thing is that there were ONLY Polyporous Growths, no other variants (I think there are 4 variants in total, with different mat in each of them).

Did you read the thread I linked? It mentions toggling the checkerboard option in graphics.
I read that entire thread. Conclusion there seems to be shooting them from a ship and using limpets but we all know they broke that too. And what does "toggling the checkerboard option" mean. I know what it is, but toggle it on or off? Thx.

I've experienced the exact same thing since long before Colonisation was a thing. From what I can gather, it's some bizarre rendering issue that somehow also impacts what fruits of the Brain Trees can spawn. I've had mixed results fighting this one. Toggling chequerboard rendering worked the first time I tried it, then when I next encountered the problem, it seemed to make no difference whatsoever, and supercruising to alternative locations seemed to work instead. But then I'm also pretty sure that isn't always a reliable fix either.

It's really quite an annoying bug, but I doubt colonisation has anything to do with it.
