Brand new again, played years ago, still locked in orbit around a sun I was stuck at

I tried loading up both Horizons and the other game separately and I'm still there. How do I escape orbit if thrusting away from it doesn't work and going into superwhatever doesn't comply?

Die, simple as.

You rebuy your ship (as long as you remembered the first rule of law "never fly without rebuy") then fly on as if nothing ever happened.

Just with a slight hole in your virtual wallet.

Orbit around what?
Have you dropped out of SC at a star or in Supper Cruse Assist orbiting a planet?
If a star; select it then manurer so it is directly behind you then move away until you lose the Mass Lock. Be aware of your temperature and pop a heat sink or two.
If a planet disengage SCA from the LH panel.

It says I'm not mass locked. I'm just not moving no matter what direction I face. I lock onto any nearby things and aim directly away from the star and supercruise says "cannot comply". I hit tab to boost and go max throttle and appears I'm standing still. I still have full fuel, as well. I put all my energy into my engine. That's about the extent of the game that I know. The thing is, I know so little about the game that I don't know what information to supply, so if there's anything in particular you need to know, I can try to figure it out. But as for what, I have no idea what to look for, really. What makes supercruise not comply?

As far as I'm aware, I'm out of supercruise, stuck with a sun-like star taking up the back-facing direction, it's close enough that I can make out it's shape when I spin my ship around, so very close, as if I'm "mass locked" but that indicator isn't lit up or anything.

I want to iterate that I'm very new. I'd played this game for about ten minutes three years ago? I think. Before getting locked around that star. And I loaded it up today and was actually surprised to see I'm still there, not having remembered it until that moment.

It's all stowed as far as I'm aware, none of those indicators are lit up. I've checked by deploying my cargo scoop and retracting it, so according to this, cargo scoop, landing gear, mass lock, all of these are empty, indicators not lit. Weapons are stowed away. I actually have no idea what's going on, feels like I may be bugged, or I'm missing something obvious. How do you self-destruct? Well, funny thing is, I just tried to take a screenshot and figured out how to die. I turned off my shields accidentally by hitting del. This could help. For some reason I can't upload the picture, the file name shows a strikethrough.

What are you locked on to?

If you're trying to jump to another system and that system is obscured by a planet you can't jump.

Rather than jumping, just try activating super cruise. On console this is Y+dpad down...

Self-destructing worked, by taking shields offline. Thank you. It's okay, it was a zero credits ship, the starter. I don't believe I was locked onto anything at that moment. But I tried locking onto things in front of me and close by. How do you activate supercruise on PC? I tried looking to the right and didn't see a modules interface, honestly. But my shields being down, the overheating, took about a minute and a half to destroy me, so I'm guessing nominal.

Overheating? Shields?

You activated silent running and fried your ship.

How would I self-destruct normally? Is there a button for it?

Yes - right side HUD, ship tab.

What you (probably) missed:
per default, supercruise and hyperjump are bound to the same button. If you have a hyperjump targeted, the ship will attempt a hyperjump, otherwise supercruise. If the jump target is obscured (e.g. by a star taking up half your visible universe), it can't. The ship will usually also show the reason why it can't comply on the top right info screen. Either deselect the hyperjump, or bind seperate buttons for HJ and SC and use the SC. Depending on the ship, in your situation, this might get toasty.

And you were moving. However, moving at about the speed of sound next to a star is impressingly unimpressive. Stars are big.

I would suggest, as a start, you delete your current pilot ("Clear Save" from the start menu) and go through the basic startup tutorial again (you won't lose that much, and it is supposd to better than all those years ago). After that, there are additional training scenarios, but as long as you heed the two basic guidelines of the interstellar traveller, you should be fine:
Don't Panic
and
Never Fly Without Rebuy.
