Brand new to the Game: Question About a Weapons Setup

I wanted to ask here as I am not sure If I am just doing something wrong or if I have a bug.

After grinding some $$ trading I bought a Vulture and fit it out with C3 burst laser and C3 cannon, both were turrets.

Went to a RES and after targeting a baddie (Wanted) with weapons deployed and assigned to the first fire group, Laser to mouse 1 and cannon to Mouse 2, nothing would shoot. I could not get the target to turn red (aggressed) unless I rammed them.

I docked and swapped various weapons out and everything else I fit would fire regardless of size or quality except these two types of weapons (C3 Burst laser and cannon). There were no other turret types of weapons available at the station I was at so i couldn't verify if it was a turret isse or a problem with those particular weapons bugging.

Any insights?

I'm also pretty noob, so sorry if this is wrong, but I think you need to go into your ships functions menu and change the turret weapon mode to "target only".

The vulture is notorious for having power issues - a deliberate ploy by FD to stop it from being overpowered. I suspect that you simply do not have enough power to fire the damn thing.

I had sufficient power for everything.

I will check this out tonight!

Fixed or gimballed weapons are far superior to turrets.
Especially on a vulture. If you're running a larger ship like the python, clipper, T7/T9 you might need a turret or two cover your blindspots.

If it's a case of you bounty hunting and the target is not already hostile (i.e, red on the radar and shooting you) then it's the turret IFF-- they don't shoot things that aren't hostile. (except when they do. Hi System security.)

Also you don't have control over when turrets fire. If the target is within the firing arc of your turret, they'll track and fire until you run out of power and keep firing.

Turrets now require you to set them to a fire group and fire one shot before they engage, I personally wouldn't use turrets but start with gimballed weapons as turrets are basically auto fire where other types of weapons give you more control and help get you learn the game better

Turrets are useful on the larger, less manoueverable ships as they can target smaller more nimble ships without you having to face the enemy all the time. You also have to manually kick-start the turrets by pressing your fire button. They won't open fire on a target until you do. I believe that this was introduced to prevent pilots picking up fines and bounties when their turrets were shooting willy-nilly at anything that moved.
I would say that, in a vulture, you're probably better off fitting gimballed weapons as you already have the agility to keep mostly on target.

AS others have said, gimballed weapons are the way to go. Especially on a vulture.
If you are a good pilot, you can try Fixed weapons, but you have to be exceptionally accurate and I imagine small ships are near impossible to hit at all.
Try some nice class 2 weapons if you can't find a gimballed C3 set.
I'd have a pair of lasers and not bother with any canons or machine guns.

So is there no way to control turreted weapons, once you hit the fire button? I tried them, but found because they just don't stop, over heating and power are major issues, so is there a way to pause them at all?
