Newcomer / Intro Brand new.

Please don't hurt me. : -- )

I spent a few hours yesterday watching training videos and playing all the training missions (except one). I plan on going back and doing all that again but I wanted to do some playing before I got too tired.

Anyway. I started my first mission, pick up data from POINT A and take to POINT B. I screwed it up because I tihnk I went to POINT B first. Then I was too tired and stopped for the day.

So far I like the game design. Its 24/7 Battle Front except there are ten factions instead of two. Plus there is the whole earning money, RPG side. Also its pretty complex and somewhat thought out. Which is great.

So of course I have lots of questions. But I want to pace myself so I will just ask a couple then go play more.

1 - Reading the forums everyone says I need insurance. Do I have it now? Where do I get it? How do I see what I do have?

2 - What is Solo play? I didnt play that because I figured it didn't count in the "real game" and I was anxious to start my new character.

Thank you for your time. I really appreciate it. I am sure I will be back with more questions soon.

Oh wait one more please.

3 - Also from the forums people talk about the "manual" Where is this? Is this the HELP I have read that a couple times. It seems like a short manual.

Hi and welcome!

1) Check the right hand info panel -> first tab -> Bottom left.

There's your balance then re-buy cost. If you die and your balance is under your re-buy cost you will probably loose your ship and be booted back to the sidewinder. A very limited "loan" can be got but it's not that extensive. Additionally you can choose not to get certain modules or weapons etc back to lower the re-buy cost. In short it's always best to have 2x or even 3x your insurance in your bank balance.
If you are close or under fly a cheaper ship or downgrade fora while.

2) Brief rundown of modes:
Open mode - If you enter a system/star/station etc and there is another player(s) you will be connected if the network connection is good enough.
Private group - The above applies but only with other players in that group
Solo - You will never connect with other players

You can swap freely between modes as you see fit and progress is consistent across mode.

3) Top right of launcher just under "Welcome <name here>"

Again, welcome to the forums and the game and if you have questions fire away :D

Also note aside: Don't expect to "win" all the training missions, even vets with 1000 hours can't manage some of them.. :p

Alex covered everything, so just - Welcome aboard, commander. Have fun out there! o7

(and yeah, don't get discouraged by training missions. They kind of represent the worst possible scenario that can happen in the game)

Welcome, Commander!

Your insurance question - yes, you already have it. When you check your status in the right-hand panel, you'll see the value of your ship, and below that, the Rebuy cost, which is 5% of the value of your ship. In order to rebuy your ship in case it gets destroyed, you have to have at least that many credits in your account, or you'll be forced to restart in your starting Sidewinder. That's what "flying with insurance" means. You should never fly a ship you can't afford to rebuy several times. Also, cargo, unclaimed combat vouchers and exploration data you haven't turned in will all be lost if you're destroyed.

If you haven't upgraded your Sidewinder yet, your rebuy cost will be zero. That's because it's a loaner. If you try to sell it later you won't get anything for it besides the cost of the upgraded modules you put in it.

Solo play - if you play Solo, you will still be partcipating in the game, but you'll be hidden from all other human players. You won't see them and they won't see you. You'll still be able to run missions, do trades and encounter NPC enemies.

Have fun and fly safe!

Got totally ninja'd there

Just to add:
1. For any ship you buy and any modules you add, insurance is automatically included. If your ship does get destroyed then you pay a 5% excess fee (rebuy cost). If you do get destroyed in your starting Sidewinder and don't have enough credits for the rebuy then it's just best clearing your save and starting again, and think of the experience more like a an advanced training mission. Actually that's the perfect time to experiment and try a few things out before starting the game proper.

3. If you don't have access to the launcher or are on an Xbox you can also download the PDF manual from https://community.elitedangerous.com (right-side) and if you prefer in Russian, German or French.

Solo play is like single player whilst attached to the same universe that everyone uses, the important point to note is that anything you earn in any of the modes transfers with you and you can change modes at anytime. So if for example you spend a few weeks in Solo, earn yourself a Viper and decide to move into Open you will have your Viper in Open at the same location you left Solo, and vice versa so you can drop back into Solo at anytime as well.

Insurance is a poor term for what is basically your right to buy back your lost ship at the point of destruction. In short if you have enough funds you can buy everything you lost back at a vastly reduced rate compared to its purchase price, not a big deal in a Sidewinder that costs nothing but a massive deal if you have a top of the range ship worth over 1B cr. If you can't afford the rebuy 'insurance' costs then you can I think loan a small amount otherwise you've lost it for good. So always make sure you can afford the rebuy costs in short.

Just an addendum on the solo play question:
- All modes are valid, and you can switch between then. It's the same save, you don't loose your ship or anything when switching.
- If you experience network problems, I very much advise to switch to solo. It's much more stable than anything else.
- If you don't want to be shot down by psycho players (they might be a minority, but they are the ones most noticeable), look for the Moebius private group and apply there. It has 27k players in a regulated environment. Anybody who goes psycho there is simply banned, so he can't do that much damage. Sure it's less risky, but people also are more friendly and cooperative there, as they are not in constant fear of being attacked, so it's not a bad idea to apply there and take a look at it.
.
Welcome to the game, hope to meet you out there. (But as you might have guessed, I am either in solo or Moebius, depending on how well the network is at the time I play. )

First, let me welcome you to the Elite: Dangerous Galaxy. My rule 2 is; Have Fun (it is just a game, but WHAT a GAME!).

The learning curve is so steep that the mountain goats go around in teams, roped together (and even then they may fall off, but that means the Vultures get to eat!). However, when you master something, and do it well, the buzz is worth the effort.

Now, Rule 1, which is; Never Fly if you cannot cover the REBUY. REBUY is the insurance excess on your ship, and is 5% of the value of your ship (including all upgrades, but not the cargo). If you get killed, and you can cover the REBUY, you will get a replacement ship identical to the one you lost. However, if you cannot cover the REBUY you may well end up back in a basic Sidewinder. Please do not let this happen to you, as the forum is littered with tales of woe when other Players have ignored Rule 1, and then got killed.

When you decide to buy a new ship, try to have 200% of the purchase price first. That way you have enough for the ship, some basic outfitting, a couple of loads of cargo, and a couple of REBUYs (just in case). If you are trading in a ship, take it back to factory spec first. When you sell any ship you will always take a 10% hit on the value of the ship at the time of selling. However, if you take it back to factory spec first you get back the full amount that you paid for the upgrades (at this time, at least). Then, when you sell the ship, your losses will be reduced. For example, I have an A Rated Cobra MkIII worth 10Mcr. If I were to sell her now I would take a loss of 1Mcr. However, if I take her back to factory spec and then sell her my loss will be about 35Kcr.

Have fun, fly safely, and see you out amongst the stars. Feel free to ask any questions, we all had to learn somewhere, and those that care will answer all they can.
