I'm having a lot of fun with upgrading the ship, but I find the upgrades a bit 'dry' and having a (sort of) linear upgrade path of E->A (I know there are weight differences and power but power especially is more of a cap, as it doesn't affect your regen). Maybe having different brands as well, so one make could be very energy efficient for it's power but heavy, while another would have massive output with massive energy drain, and so on.
Now we know there are some brands in the Elite universe, so it would be nice to see some names attached (Ingram pulse laser, Lance & Ferman etc.). This could be more flavourful than the 'rare' upgrades like overcharged weapons. Matbe
The current upgrade system is similar to Armored Core, where you weigh up different factors for the weapons and what you want to do with them, and I think that offers some good ideas on the outfitting options, and this can be tied into brands and companies.
There is the dichotomy of Energy weapons vs. Solid Shell already, but you could have some differences in them, so one brand of pulse lasers favours slower pulse time to favour higher damage per pulse.
Maybe different power distributor brands that favour different factors - brand A has larger capacitors but slower recharge time, brand B is the opposite, brand C recharges weapons faster than engines. You could do this for engines - since the flight engine non-newtonian you can have a boost favouring thruster, or a top-speed one.
