Breaking the 3400LY barrier - a new exploration depth record

"I'll see you below 3400LY" said CMDR Taen to me. We were swapping exploration tales - he had broken my pre-3.0 depth record of -3381LY, pushing the boundary of explored space to -3393LY, before I nudged it down again to -3397LY. Could we do any better? I wasn't so sure. The jumps were getting bigger and the chances of the stars aligning to reach an even lower system were getting vanishingly small. But I couldn't help but keep looking...

I searched for days. There were several oh-so-nearly systems, with not-quite-viable routes, neutron stars just not in the right place. Each time I was certain this would be it, and carefully read off the coordinates from the galaxy map, only to be thwarted by Pythagoras. I was about ready to give up, but I worked through the last of my candidate systems, just to make sure. And a good thing too!

Here is the view from Thaae Byoe AA-A h2, at 3433LY below the galactic plane. You can reach it starting from CW-V e2-2; from there jump to YE-A g2 and then the final hop to AA-A h2. You'll find a big class O on your arrival, orbited by seven T Tauri stars (too bad they were not class L or it could have been 'O white and the seven dwarves'). Sadly you won't find a neutron star to send you back, so alas the good starship Fenix will have to rise from the ashes of the rebuy screen once more.

Bedtime now so I'll think of a good name tomorrow!

Nicely done, CMDR! Not one for one-way missions myself, but the system is now in EDSM (though unvisited) and you had fun, which makes this a win in my book.

Thanks Redfox - I’ve logged my visit. I’m not a great fan of the one way trips myself, but since the double neutron supercharge got nerfed it seems to be the only way to push the records further. I did purchase a new ship especially for the purpose so I didn’t have to blow up the Endurance. Still, at 13M each time I had better start doing some proper exploring for a change!

At the risk of turning this thread, the double neutron boost was identified as a bug by Frontier, and later fixed, so I am not sure "nerfed" really applies there. In fairness, many of up implored Frontier to leave the bug in the game and call it a feature. Alas, they chose not to.

As far as pushing extremes, for me, I think the biggest challenge is actually finding a way back to turn in the data and claim the tag. In my experience, getting there is the easy part. It's the getting back that's hard.

All that said, to each their own, and if the journey was enjoyed by the traveler, that's what is most important.

So all we need to do is explain that the bug makes a wonderful feature...

The double supercharge was indeed a bug; however, it lasted for a long time (about a year I think) and had survived previous updates intact. I also understand Frontier highlighted in a newsletter a discovery that was made using the technique, which seemed to legitimise it. The 4x jump range boost from neutron stars was also a bug, but in that case Frontier were persuaded to keep it.

Ultimately it’s a great shame they chose to remove it - it was an exciting mechanic with a great balance of risk vs reward. As soon as the Exploration Focused Feedback goes up I shall petition for its return!

I remember how saying that it was a bug was unpopular at the time, with most people saying it must be an intended feature. It shouldn't have stayed for as long as it did, that's for certain.
The 4x jump range boost was more of a typo, not a bug: the functionality was meant to be, just the number was in error. Two charges from the same star was not meant to be, and wasn't due to a simple numerical error.
Well, when the exploration FF finally starts (whenever that'll be), we can bombard FD with suggestions for re-implementing it in a better way. Assuming they don't include it, of course.

AFAIK FF is unfortunately only for feedback to *their* suggestions, *not* to suggest anything of our own. But hey, I also haven't lost all hope that they'll pick up some ideas from the plethora the community has come up with.

Indeed, it's for feedback on their suggestions, so a separate thread for just this wouldn't be for that place - but that doesn't mean that you can't mention in your feedback that previously reachable systems should be reachable again.

The Four Horsemen of the Mug Apocalypse or on their way.
Following our latest lead after picking up some intel at Erikson's Star, the dark forces failed to stop us there and I don't expect they have given up. I fear this one may be another trap, but the truth needs to be told, Raxxla won't remain hidden forever.

We go because it's there, and because we can.
