Brewer Security. What's the point of them?

What is the point of Brewer Security at colonisation construction sites? They don't do anything except fly in circles, so they're just 'window dressing'?

The reason I say this is because I got jumped by a pirate as I was docking at the construction site. Said pirate proceeded to hammer me, which of course turned off autodock, but the Brewer security just did nothing, and carried on flying in circles around the site.

So, are they supposed to do anything other than look pretty? Or are they supposed to help when under attack?

EDIT: So I found out I still had Crimes turned off. Thanks to those below who reminded me!

They are there to enforce the laws about illegal goods and prevent baddies* delivering them to the construction site.

I've seen them fight pirates, so I don't know what you did wrong.
Did the construction site station defence beams not help you?

Do you have crime reporting turned off? I've been attacked occasionally by pirates at construction sites and in general the security ships haven't been able to do that much because the construction platform's defence guns have taken them out very quickly.

Oh fuuuu.... I had crimes turned off, from way back when the AXI did the invasion of ... Maia? I forget where it was now.

. I guess that was my fault for forgetting I'd turned that off!

Soft cap on colonisation as eventually you'll smuggle so much stuff they're hostile and you can no longer colonise.
