Bringing Galaxy Bookmarks beyond the bare minimum

I was very excited to read about the upcoming galactic bookmarks, but seeing the UI in the screenshots, I had a few concerns / suggestions on how to make this a great feature instead of just a feature.

  1. At a bare minimum, add the ability to sort the bookmark list by distance from my current location (alphabetically as a bonus).
  2. Show bookmarks visually on the galaxy map view. Right now it looks like they aren't shown.
  3. Include a shorter list of closest bookmarks in the left side panel so we can route to nearby bookmarks without opening the galaxy map.
    • Especially useful for A-B trading use case (which is the prime time I've wanted bookmarks).
    • Include in list of items you can "filter" out.
    • Place bookmarks below local system, and above nearby systems perhaps.
    • Limit not by distance, but by count (when exploring you might have distances of hundreds or thousands of LY if you tagged interesting places you want to travel to).
  4. Search / filtering options, i.e show only bookmarked stations/planets, search by name like "ELW" to find tagged earth like worlds etc.
  5. Explorer wishlist: Ability to add bookmark on a planet location. I.e bookmark my current location.
    • Useful if you find a really cool vista while exploring.
    • Include ability to target the bookmark, just like any targetable POI (and show it on the planetary map view).
    • Also useful for say Elite Racers or any other time you want to go to a specific location.
    • Better yet, allow me to add a planetary bookmark by selecting the planet and entering Latitude / Longitude.
  6. Ability to share a bookmark with another commander.
    • Optionally share to private group / wing.
    • Useful when you want to meet others somewhere, or share that cool RES location etc.
    • Especially useful in combination with 5.

I believe either 1 or 3, or both, are required as a bare minimum if you begin to collect a significant number of bookmarks. If they are just ordered in a list on the galaxy map in some arbitrary order (or even alphabetically), it's quickly going to become unwieldy.

Imagine bookmarking all interesting systems on a trip to the core - could be hundreds of bookmarks. Once you're back to trading, you'd still want those bookmarks, but they shouldn't be the primary focus and isn't something you'd want to browse through on a regular basis.

TLDR: A list of bookmarks is ok. A few additions would make it great.

Excelent list, let me just make an addition/modification. For racers, the best option would be waypoints, not bookmarks. A bookmark could set the starting line, then they would follow the waypoints. The difference is that waypoints would be temporary, they would vanish when the instance is deleted (when the last commander leaves). Only the bookmark at the starting line would remain.

The bear minimum is ugly indeed....
