Bristol Zoo (UK)

My family and I visited Bristol Zoo over the summer holidays, before it closed, and I thought some people might find the proposals for their new zoo interesting for ideas for recreating/inspiration. Their design proposals and further information can be found at future.bristolzoo.org.uk. It's going to focus on endangered animals, with conservation and breeding facilities.

I'm glad they are moving a load of stuff to a brand new site because the space for the zoo at the moment is way too constrained to build high welfare enclosures. They were doing their best but it just wasn't possible to upgrade all the facilities.

My mum remembers riding one of the elephants as a child before they stopped doing that!

I once did a partial recreation of the old Bristol Zoo in ZT2. I get why they moved but it’s also a shame as it has lots of character and history. I have been thinking about trying it in Planet Zoo too.

The new site is at the top of the hill where my father lives.
While I remember the old zoo fondly, it was dated and difficult to get to as the parking was very limited.
The new site should be awesome, and have good views from it too!

That would be cool! I've got a leaflet of the map from when we went, I can put a photo up if that would be helpful.

From what I've heard, the only mammals actually moving over from Bristol Zoo to their new site are the lowland gorillas and blue-eyed black lemurs. Red pandas will also move, but they will be a new pair (the current Bristol Zoo red pandas have gone to Exmoor Zoo).

Otherwise, all the animals moving over are much smaller - a few smaller birds and the rarest of the reptiles, amphibians, small freshwater fish and invertebrates for their conservation centre.

A lot of the bigger or non-threatened animals have already got homes lined up for them - among them warty pigs will go to Edinburgh, lions and fur seals to unspecified zoos in the UK, giant tortoises are going to Jersey and aye-ayes to Dublin Zoo.

Still looking forward to seeing what the new zoo looks like - if its anything like their most recent exhibit area, Bear Wood, it's going to be amazing.

Wild Place Project (The new Bristol Zoo) is much better than Bristol Zoo, probably one of nicest zoo I've seen very naturalistic zoo. They got a huge brown bear exhibit with natural woodland exhibit, living with wolves together. Lynx and Wolverine also live along with them, in separate exhibit of course lol. I'm gutted that okapis are gone, they are not keeping them anymore. But I am looking forward to seeing how Wild Place Project grow with new animals!
