Community Event / Creation Buckyball Racing Club presents: Alphabet of Science

As the current leader I can only say this: Do your worst! I'm not afraid! I am invincible! Muhahaha!

That said, yes, I'm in for another week. I'm a bit curious to try the reg DBX. Ericus Volans has been gathering dust since "Musical Science".

By the way, I'm a bit suprised that there are no stations named after Carl Wilhelm Scheele. Life was pretty hard before they discovered oxygen...

Ok, so now it's official:

The race has by unanimous vote been extended to last until 23. October 23:59:59 Galactic Mean Time. Now get to your ships and start route-plotting.

OK, I started route plotting today. I figured I'd probably go alphabetic because, well, life's too short right?

Anyway, I started going through the list, finding candidate stations (ignoring hits in unexplored systems and ignoring stations too far from the main star).

I've got as far as ...

Holy crap Stern, you are a sick sick man! I hereby announce my intent to walk away from this lest it claim my sanity. I'm off to play a nice relaxing game of 2048.

lol I share your pain and I used EDTS to help, but it still required a lot of manual intervention as there were so many possibilities.

... I've got as far as ...

When planning this race I also used EDTS, made a couple of modifications so I could paste the output from one search as input to another and calculated the worst case scenario (Alphabetical, Large ship, no Horizons - took me about an hour): 1908.26LY. Hence the Alpha-bonus.
I figured that a commander with a much less melty face would spend the first weekend of the race calculating the optimum route without the alphabetical constraint and blitz the leaderboards. Or that the good CMDR Alot would rewrite EDTS to support this scenario. None of that has happened yet.

So I urge you to utilize those idle coffee breaks at work (supposing you're allowed to drink coffee at your computer) and give EDTS a little workout. You can do it. I have utmost faith in you. First place beckons :D

Don't give up! The route plotting is time consuming, rather than difficult. Here's the approximate technique that I used (not saying what my final route was just yet, though):
  1. start up the Galaxy Map and go through the stations with Bohr (or whatever is next) in the name. Note down those that are close enough to reach in a small number of jumps (depends on what you're flying - I scouted the route with my Cobra Mk3 with 25.70LY range and chose systems within ~100LY).
  2. Out of your shortlist, exclude those with excessive supercruise journeys. I also visited some systems that I had not previously scanned to check this (may be optional for you).
  3. If step 2 leaves you with a choice of station, either choose a favourite or fly to the best two and repeat from step 1. If encountering too many variables, start from the end of the course and work backwards. This will probably need to be done for the last couple of jumps, anyway, to ensure that the two ends of the route join up without needing a long journey.

I started at both ends, checking Bohr stations from Archimedes and Sommerfeld stations from Thorne. I found that there were many good stations for the first jump but only one good one for the last jump, so I mostly worked backwards, knowing that I would not find it too hard to link up near the start of the route. It seemed to work out well, especially as I only found one station named after Galileo on the Galaxy Map and needed to be in the right area to reach it without a long trip. (Luckily, I have the Sol permit! Interestingly, I also passed through Isinor whilst scouting my route, although not whilst actually flying it... having a good collection of permits can help in unexpected ways!)

Whoops! The list says Galilei (Galileo's last name). I wouldn't want to force participants to get the Sol permit in order to race. There are plenty of Galilei stations:

Sholintet, Galilei Asylum (???Ls, Planetary Outpost)
LP 849-20, Galilei Enterprise (???Ls, Planetary Outpost)
Ejagh, Galilei Laboratory (1975Ls, Planetary Outpost)
Ngurumbha, Galilei Orbital (???Ls, Unknown Starport)
Sosong, Galilei Platform (???Ls, Planetary Outpost)
HIP 23302, Galilei Port (???Ls, Unknown Starport)
6 Andromedae, Galilei Ring (115Ls, Unknown Starport)

Thanks for extending the race end, I was disappointed not to make it for this one.

I'm hoping to find enough time to play and get back from Jaques by weekend (I was parked by the Kes-75 Magnetar about 4k from Jaques last time I played).

I'll have time for a late, late run on Sunday as long as I use my lunchtimes for some constructive route planning this week. See you in space CMDRs. :D

Facing the final curtain, after an additional week where absolutely no-one has submitted any new runs, we declare the winners of this race:

CMDR Polly takes first place with a stunning time of 39:40, followed by
CMDR Edelgard von Rhein, setting a time of 46:19, seconds ahead of
CMDR Markzx59 with a very respectable 46:32

CMDR Edelgard von Rhein takes first place by default, being the only one to race in this class.

Congratulations to the winners and thank you for participating. Sorry that not all who wanted to could.

Thankyou for organising CMDR. It was a race of epic proportions lol.

I'm tempted to suggest it should be a perpetual race due to the time required to produce an optimal route ;)

I was hoping to optimise mine some more but I never got enough time.

Thanks to Stern Winter for staging the race! Well done to Polly for winning and to racer1 for a very good time! I think maybe that more people would have participated but for the beta...
Here is the route I used (supercruise distances are approximate, mostly taken from the system map but one or two from the nav panel):
Bohr Dock, LHS 6427, Outpost, 17 ls
Curie Horizons, LP 470-30, Outpost, 179 ls
Darwin Hub, Kulianminy, Outpost, 99 ls
Einstein Hub, Xingara, Outpost, 374 ls
Faraday Enterprise, Kokary, Starport, 95 ls
Galileo, Sol, Starport, 508 ls
Hawking Enterprise, LP 906-9, Outpost, 88 ls
Ising Refinery, Solati, Outpost, 42 ls
Joule Port, Giguen, Starport, 82 ls
Kirchoff Terminal, Pareda, Outpost, 857 ls
Lavoisier Dock, Riedquat, Starport, 281 ls
Maxwell Dock, M Hydrae, Starport, 208 ls
Newton Station, Akarn, Starport, 95 ls
Oersted Gateway, Mehen, Starport, 268 ls
Pasteur Orbital, Widow's Light, Starport, 175 ls
Qurra Hub, LTT 15461, Outpost, 58 ls
Roentgen Gateway, Clayakarma, Starport, 575 ls
Sommerfeld Landing, Moarasi, Outpost, 34 ls

Thanks Stern Winter for giving us this race!

My plans to make a regulation DBX-run was foiled by events unnamable as I was caught betwixt many wicked things last week.

I've also (obviously) been reading far too much Lovecraft.

However, here's my route:
LHS 6427 Bohr dock
LP-470 30 Curie horizons
Wei Hua Darwin hub
Xingara Einstein hub
Te Uira Faraday Orbital
Tauernonese Galilei Station
Oduduro Hawking terminal
Cosi Ising Hub
Ross 41 Joule Relay
G 35-15 Kirchoff Hub
LHS 1228 Lavoisier Hub
LHS 3923 Maxwell Hub
Wosyra Pao Newton City
L 119-33 Oersted Dock
LHS 6050 Pasteur Gateway
Kadjerong Qurra Horizons
Lorden Roentgen Horizons
Moarasi Sommerfeld Landing
I tried to plan the route to avoid distances longer than 2 jumps (<104 ly). Occasionally I used a extra jump to avoid long supercruise distances. By pure luck it also turned out that almost all of the stars I passed was scoopable. Quite fortunate, since I ran with a reduced fuel tank.

A great and quite demanding race. Both in planning and flying. And I am truly impressed how fast Edelgard could fly it with a courier.

Fly fast!

Apologies for not making this one, in the end the lure of the new Oculus Rift was too stong and every time I sat down thinking "today's the day I plot an Alphabet of Science route" a little voice in my head would say "noooo, put on the precioussss and fly round in circles gazing at things with your mouth open".

Sorry Stern ... but congrat's to Poly, Edelgard and Markzx59 for plotting the heck out of this thing.

Take your precious to Bohr Dock - it's quite the spectacular approach in supercruise ;)

Sorry for not participating in this race! Thank you Stern for keeping the ball rolling by hosting this race despite the rather low turnout we have these days...
I haven't been playing Elite lately (which might change again now that 2.2 is released) and during leisure time I never was focused enough to plan a route and played simpler games instead.
Kudos to Edelgard, Polly and racer1 for flying fast, I hadn't expected times this low when I read through the station list :)
