Community Event / Creation Buckyball Racing Club presents: Multi Ship Madness (12th - 14th July)

If you check the Lavecon programme, you might be able to guess which one's me. :p
(In case you can't, Saturday at 6pm. It's the same time as the quiz, which makes it a bit of a hard sell...)

Cool, I already had that one circled in favour of the quiz (although I do want to catch Deal or No Deal so try not to overrun).

:p

Hello all :D

Sorry I've not been around for a couple of weeks, everything's a bit hectic at the moment. Missed some good races more than likely too :( I will however see some of you in a couple of days, speaking of which...

If you check the Lavecon programme, you might be able to guess which one's me. :p

I did see that and thought that you may well be involved ;) A hard sell indeed, I'd be rather interested to listen to it and I'll probably be rubbish at a quiz so we'll have to see what happens...

and back to the racing.....;)
completed my Open run just for fun

Made 4 more Unlimited runs this afternoon, came within striking distance of furrycat. Weird witchspace gods (stupidly long loading times), were frustrating, but so was that speedy speedy time by furrycat. Well flown to the cat of furr! :D

(entries may arrive late, as I can't process them atm because of toddler).

Some more action on the course this evening...
Unfortunately, the board update will have to wait until tomorrow around midday gametime due to technical problems.

Also I'm missing Seneh's video (I think the one submitted is from an aborted run) and a few screenshots from Bruski (but there might be another improved entry incoming anyway?)

There are still over 45 minutes left. Plenty of time to do any last minute attempts! :D

Submissions will be accepted until 09:00 UTC tomorrow, July 15th. Fly fast!

The race is over and the final submissions are in.

In Unlimited, CMDR Seneh jumped into 3rd place in the Hauler Black Lightning and the Adder Black. In second place, we have CMDR Bruski in the Asp Explorer Sugar Glider and the Hauler Lazarus.
The winner is CMDR furrycat in the Asp Explorer Blue Asp fly and the Diamondback Explorer Riband 2.0.
The 'Fly in Style'-Award goes to CMDR <-lightspeed-> who enjoyed the spacious luxury of his Anaconda Slippery and the orcaness of When Wet.

In the One-Design-class CMDR <-lightspeed-> takes 3rd with Drum and Bass. CMDR Kliggy came in second with Blake and Avon.
The winner is CMDR Aken B. with Bud Spencer and Terence Hill who managed to get the regulation ships around the course faster than most of the Unlimited entries!
A special mention goes to CMDR Bruski who did 2 runs in Unlimited and 4 in One-Design, steadily improving his times.

Thanks everyone for racing!
It has been great fun watching all the action and I hope it has been as enjoyable on the course (despite the overcomplicated, not-so-well-explained pit-stop-time rule). :)
Let me know what I could have done better if you have any criticism or suggestions!
See you in the next races and fly fast!

Thanks for organising it was good fun :)

I had two insurance screens with the Viper - missed the letter box on exit.

Very nearly smeared myself across the windscreen of CMDR lightspeed's anaconda when I left the area in my asp lol.

Thanks cookiehole - it's a great race idea, and I'm sorry I wasn't able to participate.

It might have benefited from a bit of advance notice of the rules so people had time to get two ships to the start line.

Woohoo, silver! Congrats to all the other winners, especially furrycat with his blazing time. Will there be video of that forthcoming?

I really loved this course (as you can tell by the fact that I ran it more than 10 times).

It was great to have a short race. Less than 20 min is ideal for MWMs I think.

I thoroughly enjoyed the lap mechanic, as it meant I was visiting stations twice as much, and could recognize and learn more about how to approach them. I really need to go back to Buckyball Supercruise Academy, I'm still terrible at it.

The multiple ships thing was a cool conceit, although I could see it discouraging Unlimited entries because kitting out two ships is even harder than one. I didn't have an isue with this, especially once I figured out that with grade 1 jumponium and a class 4 FSD in the hauler I could make the long jump.

The shorter jump distances were also interesting, as it led to needing to optimize weight (I ran 4D thrusters in the Asp for a few tries) perfectly to get the jump distances right, in addition to the route plotting mechanics mentioned earlier.

It was also a nice change of pace from recent races which have had a much of "scramble" mechanics, for lack of a better word. I enjoy the challenge of those as well, but just having a set course was relaxing in its own way.

After last week I was sad there were no surface landing, since I have a more solid grasp on how to improve my time with those, but it did allow me to get a lot of supercruise experience, which I dearly need.

Seconded.

Hope that wasn't too much feedback. :p

Thanks so much for running it, and also props on the shiny graphics! :D

Wolf 562 Major Inc. (WOMI +27%) is happy to report that over 270,000 credits have been received as insurance payouts from CMDR Bruski alone, and has declared Multi Ship Madness, "a highly profitable venture".

Manager Mila Webster said, "I never expected we could increase repairs and overhaul business so much just by buying some racers booze, flags, and cheap tropies! We'll have to do this again as soon as possible, our stockholders will be delighted! I only hope that none of the injuries or deaths would draw unwarranted media attention." Upon learning of the Buckyball Racing Club's packed calendar, she excused herself and was later seen talking to an aide, demanding, "What do you mean you can't get a hold of Buckyball?! You don't know where he is? You don't know WHO he is?!"

She later sent a statement though her press secretary: "The markets report exciting results. A boom may be on it's way!"

cheers cookie, great race.. I think getting buckyballers to read lots of words may be the problem with the rules not being clear.. ;)
congrats to furry and aken.
getting a route so the adder would mis plot was a nice touch.

Set course? Surface landing? Supercruise experience? Stay tuned for the upcoming race "Fly Me To The Moon", there will be more of all this than you can shake your insurance policy at!
Sorry for the shameless advertising :D
(but seriously, you'll need that insurance, keep it at hand just in case)

Not only the Adder, even the Viper plotted a jump too much...if cookie managed to get such route planner behaviour on purpose, that's an awesome feat! Very nice race and concept, liked it!

Yeah, that was probably my biggest mistake. I thought about the race a lot but didn't really do much tangible preparation in the weeks before. I played around with the route and spreadsheets before, but did the final route, rules and banner all on Monday.
Not being fast in writing stuff generally and in English especially didn't exactly make it better... I'll definately set myself an earlier due date for future events :D

Glad you enjoyed it! :)

The probably only advantage of all the procrastination was that I could adjust the style of the race to add to the variety of the schedule. I also didn't want it to be Horizons-only after another planetary event.

About SC: From what I saw in your videos you probably take too little advantage of gravity braking. I'd recommend playing around with different throttle settings in Supercruise especially on the final approach. Don't be afraid to overshoot, it's faster in some cases (or depending on the approach style). But really everything that lets you spend more time at full throttle and brings you close to planets for increased deceleration is way faster than the 0:06s-approach.
Also very helpful: The Buckyball Flight Academy

It wasn't really planned but rather a bit luck and the side effect of how I was planning the course. I optimized the distances mainly for One-Design (as loadout optimization is a big part of Unlimited anyway) so that the Viper could do it in a sane number of jumps but with 'jumprange matters' in mind aswell. I also tried to keep the number of jumps between Adder and Viper closely together. I guess all that somehow led to the jumps being just at the edge of possible and the route planner to fail.

Main lessons learned:
1. Due date rather a week before the race than a day (especially with MWM. I didn't expect many runs on Tuesday as there litterally were 2h of preparation before the race started). Sorry for the short notice!
2. Make rules simple or well comprehensible
3. Think about Powerplay

Thanks for the good feedback. Appreciated! :)

I'm surprised my time stood. I sacrificed a lot of straight line speed to be able to do Neto in one jump and the leisurely glide in to dock seemed even slower in the light of some of the regulation times.
