Budget HOTAS Setup

Good afternoon, fellow commanders.

I'd like to invest in a budget HOTAS setup for Elite Dangerous that won't cost an arm and a leg. The missus has agreed.

I showed her the X52 Warthog, and she made a sound at the back of her throat that sounded like a Flymo cutting it's own cable. I took this to mean "Not even forensically".

Essentially I'm after a throttle and stick that'd be comfortable given the fact I am at a desk and the chair has no arms on it.

Thanks in advance :D

Second what Rampant says. I have used the t-flight hotas x every day since April and had no issues - it is a real bargain and does everything you need for under 40 squids.

The Thrustmaster T-Flight Hotas X would be my recommendation too. A friend has it and is satisfied.
And Isinona flies with it. :D

3rd the recommendation on the Hotas-X. While it is not top tier by any stretch, it's usable, durable and will give you a sense of immersion that keyboard, mouse or (yuck) gamepad can ever give you.

Now if you were willing to piecemeal the project I would go for the T-1600m:

Hall sensors make it INCREDIBLY accurate in comparison to the HOTAS-X.

And you can always add your throttle of choice at a later date.

Hotas X is hot as. A bit bendy but having a throttle and a stick right off the bat is great.

And get the PC PS3 version for £20 at Amazon!

I have had a nice X52 in the past, however it died out of warranty and I was not in the financial position to replace it. I ended up getting the Thrustmaster Hotas X because it was super cheap and I figured it would last me long enough until I could save for another "really nice" stick and throttle. Over a year later it still feels solid and everything works well on it. It doesn't have as many buttons as I would like, but it performs well enough that I really can't justify spending a couple hundred bucks on another X52, especially since their customer reviews have been growing more negative over time based on build quality.

Hotas X is a great joystick from all the reviews I read. I was torn between the X52 and Hotas X for the price range I was looking at but because I was in a decent job at the time I wanted the X52 to match the inflight controls for the extra Oculus immersion.

I think both would be great choices, I cannot recommend Thrustmaster enough (I have a T500RS and TH8A sitting around doing nothing which both have amazing build quality).

I used one of these for five years straight and loved it.

I have been using the thrustmaster for 10 years. Mine is obviously not the new one that's currently on the market but it is it's ancestor. It is awesome. It's simple. And it works great. I cannot recommend the thrustmaster joystick anymore meant to say I've had the same one for 10 years.

Is this budget one a good indicator of what its like to play with the more expensive ones, i looked into it & really liked the CH set up, as throttle has a hat which you can use for directional thrusters , but joystick doesn't have twist yaw, but at 130 throttle & 90 joystick a bit expensive if you end up preferring your mouse! Can you assign directional thrusters to an x52/55? wondered if better to get a budget one to see if i get on with it? Anyone know where to source CH ones cheaper (uk)?

The x52 Pro has three hats, one of which is assigned as directional thrusters by default when you start the game. Personally, I prefer the directional thrusters on a different hat from the default, but that's just me - I customised the setup.

Many people sing the praises of the T-Flight HOTAS X, and many users have posted their custom mappings on this forum. If you're a first-time joysticker and you're not sure about which to buy, the T-Flight HOTAS X is right for you, I think. The only issue I can see is that you might wish you'd bought the more expensive, but more flexible, x52.
