Newcomer / Intro Bug or a feature?

Hello,

I'm new to the game so maybe you can explain one thing to me.

I come to a mining location. Pirates spawn, scan me and leave because I have nothing in the cargo hold. I do some mining for minerals. Suddenly the server crashes, I'm kicked out to the main menu. Restart the game, I'm still at the mining location but suddenly new pirates spawn, scan me, blow me to smithereens and I end up re-buying my ship some 200 ly away.

The whole area was completely empty when it crashed, there were no contacts. If the server remembers where I was located before the crash and what I had in my cargo hold, why doesn't it also remember that there were no contacts and the pirates had already spawned before.

Is this normal that after a server crash the game spawns new sets of pirates? It seems like a bug to me.

I'm afraid it's normal. Not after a server crash, but each time you enter a mining location. Pirates come, scan you and leave if you're empty, or attack if you carry any cargo.
Edit: Of course, if you're in the middle of nowhere as a carrier passenger or owner, no pirates spawn. But you have to be really away from settled systems, like 500ly away or so (I think)

Yes if you have anything other than limpets in your hold and you arrive in a ring in any fashion then if the ships that almost always turn up will attack you if they are pirates, so if this does happen again as soon as you have control of your ship leave the ring as fast as possible and find somewhere to sell your cargo.

You're not the only one.
Apart from the ribbing (as a result of his choice to complain in DD 😊), there are a few good suggestions in that thread. Mainly:
  • don't go mining in a defenseless ship
  • it only takes one minor fault for you to respawn in a ring, doesn't have to be a server reset

I'd also add:
- if you respawn unexpectedly in a ring, get the heck out of dodge fast. Usually (not every time, judging from a lot of the threads on this matter), you get a couple of seconds before the clowns show up, and a few more seconds until they finish their scan and start shooting. Don't waste them.

Thanks for your answers, guys. I actually wasn't completely defenceless, but I got blown away pretty quickly anyhow, as most of my hardpoints were taken up by the mining gear.

I guess I'll take your advice and just try to run away before they spawn.

Incidentally, is it just me, or are there many more server-related problems after the Fleet Carrier update? I've only played the game for a week, but I remember I had zero problems before the update. After it, I get several disconnections a day. My internet connection is stable, all other online games work as they should.

Always loads of issues around major updates, but it should start settling down now, they have pushed out a few server updates.
Very rarely issues other times.

I'm really enjoying the game - I am actually so old that I played the original Elite on ZX Spectrum... More than 30 years on, we have this gorgeously-looking game, which is one of the best games I've played TBH, so it's good to hear server problems are not a regular thing, which would spoil the fun.
