Bug, or design? Detailed Surface Scanner results in the form of mineral/metal hotspots in rings are invisible when scanner isn't equipped

To clarify - go to any planetary ring, launch a probe at it, get results that indicate one or more hotspots. Return to a space station, unequip the surface scanner, return to the planetary ring you launched a probe at, the ring now shows no hotspots.

Bug, or by design? I was hoping that the ship's computers would remember where the hotspots were.

Apparently it's working as intended - although I'd clearly prefer discovered Data (i.e. Hotspots of Rings) to appear even when returning later without a DSS fitted - such as a Mining Ship.
