bug or game mechanic?

when I play ED I like to do multiple missions of differing types. I set a goal. which at the moment is I want a particular ship, that is only sold by another faction.
who I'm enemy too. to keep sweet with my faction I found a place that I can do missions for both. anyway to the point I took a mission to deliver 28t for faction allied to empire. I was also doing a few missions taking pirates out. after 40/50 fights my hull down to 34% and I was heading to a station for repairs. I came across a conflict zone. I thought mmm my ship can take a lot with full shields and SBs. everything was repaired except my hull. so I decided to head in. the first thing I picked on was a python. man I couldn't believe the amount of SCBs he seemed to have, I took me absolute ages to get his shields down. while I was dealing with him, 4 other enemy ships arrived. the two of us had drifted away from the main battle area, so I was on my own. the attack wave started , just as my shield went down. in previous fights, my cargo scoop was damaged, and then when my shields went down, my cargo scoop was failing. got the warning 3 times and heard the sound affect for dropping cargo. though I was not losing any cargo!. to my thinking I would be losing it and if I fled I would lose the contract. unless I could replace it form another source.
if your wondering I fled and completed mission to deliver cargo.

I'm not really sure which part of the story is a question. :D

But a couple of points:

1) Never ever let yourself to be surrounded by enemy ships in CZ with no allies around. No matter what you fly, it'll end badly for you.
2) Yes, when your cargo hatch it damaged, or someone fires a hatch limpet on you without shields, you can (and will) lose cargo. So be careful when you have mission cargo on board - it's not easily replacable.
3) Bigger NPC ships can stack huge amount of shield cells. If such thing happen in CZ, just leave it be and let allies to wear the guy down before reengaging. You'll save time, ammunition and nerves. :D

sorry at the end. I thought it was clear. I only had the mission cargo on board. it sounded like I dropped some 3 times. yet I never lost any cargo.

I think that's a bug. I had it happen once. Got the message that I was dropping cargo, but when I looked no cargo was missing.
