Bug or pathway to glory ?

I presume this is a map bug ?

It is one of the more annoying features of Stellar Forge. That is supposed to be a star cluster. But as you can see, it is a star sausage. They are all over the galaxy and they always point at Earth. This is because stellar forge uses one particular star map's data and produces those even when that are clearly wrong. It may also be due to there being a maximum stellar density it can handle.

I would REALLY like FDEV to manually fix these and turn clusters back into clusters and these sausages are clearly a bit silly.

I don't see why something couldn't be added to the star mapping formula that "feathers" out the edges on these weird bits. But even so, they're kind of cool as-is, and if we ever get the ability to colonize empty space those would be great spots to do it.

As far as I remember from it being explained before, the 2MASS catalogue isn't particularly accurate with distances. All of the 2MASS catalogue stars are like that in a sausage away from Sol. Same thing in the Eagle Nebula and NGC 7822.

Unfortunately it's not as "simple" as feathering, as these are real stars, not the procedural ones that we find in cubes between areas of stellar density change as you get closer to the core.

its line of sight with earth. telescopes on earth look out into space these are the stars in the direction it was pointing.
