Bug with neutron star boost plotting in the Galaxy map?

While embarking in a new exploration trip this evening, I noticed a potential bug when trying to take the neutron highway to the Galaxy center. I was trying to boost from the neutron star in the system 3 Capricorni. The main star of this system is a B star, in a binary system with a neutron star (c.f. system overview below).

Trying to neutron jump from another nearby neutron star (Nova Aquila NO 3, c.f. picture below) did not lead to any issues however.

My current hypothesis is that the game does not allow you to neutron jump in the Galaxy map if the main star of your current system is not a neutron star. Before opening an issue report in the tracker, I was wondering if anyone else had encountered the same problems?

Your hypothesis is moreorless correct, but I wouldn't call this an issue (unintended bug) but rather an oversight/limitation of the plotter.

The game route plotter does not consider neutron stars that are not the main star of the system. This leaves out probably less than 1% of all neutron stars, since the only objects that would overtake the neutron star would be black holes (in proc gen systems) and a limited number of catalog stars (we have probably found all such systems).

If you target the system and click jump you will be able to do it, but if you plot a route it will not consider you boosting off this star.

That said, these stars are very important for neutron plotters as they let you escape the bubble very quickly, since they are often the only neutron stars within 1000 ly of sol.

Thanks for the answers guys, I really appreciate your help!

It was the first time I encountered this issue since - as ORANGEORANGE mentioned - neutron stars are the main star of their system in the vast majority of the cases. It never crossed my mind to try to to plot a jump directly in this case since the route plotter had always worked so far.

The topic comes up often, I guess because people are so used to plotting a route to go somewhere. But in this case you don't need a route, it's just one jump.

Anyway, glad you got it sorted.

Yeah, I think I have complained about this before. The plotter doesn't know if you have the cone boost or not, it simply assumes from the primary star that you'll get a boost in particular systems. When you get one from secondary, you'll have to plot the jump manually because the protter doesn't know.

Do not plot a route. Just select the system and jump. Don't feel bad it's a common mistake.
Pardon my ineptitude, but what is the exact procedure for "just selecting the system and jumping"?

Do you mean, set target in the galaxy map and then initiate a jump, or is there something else? When you do this procedure, is there any setting that has to be made in the galaxy map other than setting target?

It's just selecting the target, nothing more required: select it on the galaxy map, and when you're back to your ship engage the FSD (and point towards the target!).

Yeah, just select the star you want to jump to (single click it) and then jump. No other interaction with the Galaxy map is needed.

It works the same as selecting a system from the navigation panel, and jumping, without ever even opening the Galaxy map.

All you need in order to jump is a target system. You don't need a route for a single jump.

Hope that helps.

Thanks for patiently clarifying. After ten years in this game and 8 years flying in VR, it sounds crazy to me, but I never tried that even once. It never occurred to me that it would work without using the plot course function.

Thanks again o7
