BUILD me a PC worthy of Mordor! I mean Lave!

Hey party people,

So I may have put the cart before the horse a little and nabbed premium beta without actually having a PC (had to secure my name).

To rectify that, I'm looking for a decent desktop capable of running three monitors comfortably. Budget is around £1400.

Any ideas?

Ta :)

Oh, also can anyone tell me if the three monitor setup works well on ED? Last video I saw discussing it said it had issues with stretching, but that was a while ago.

Thanks:smilie:

For 1400 GBP you could just get any off the shelf high end gaming PC, something with a fast (3GHz+) i5 or i7, 16GB RAM, a GTX 760 or higher*, don't even need a fancy SSD, thought these days they are usually included be default in that price range.

*It also depends on the size of your screens what kind of graphical power you would need, but the setup I outlined would definitely run ED on a single screen with all details at maximum details with ease.

An off the shelf monster is required! You should get a decent spec pc for that cash - take a look at pcspecialist.co.uk for some ideas.

The screens will add to the price a bit if you want a 3 screen setup, and a high end pc to boot.

Best just to start with one, and then add two more when you have more cash to spend :)

Planning on using Asus VG248QE 24in monitors (if I can get good deals). I'll probably start with one and get a pair to go with it, but I have to know the rig can handle their high refresh rate.

For a 3 monitor setup I would focus most of that build cost on your GPU. I don't think I have seen one of my games taxing the CPU to the limit and I am running a 3 Year old I5 2500 3.3 GHz, all I would say is that a decent water cooler on it (which are cheap as a kit) is good insurance.

I am not convinced about SSDs myself, I think the difference between a quick hard drive and one is tight enough not to bother. As said above they seem to be fitted as a matter of course anyway. You probably know but do not let any defrag software anywhere near it, they do not benefit from it and it can cause premature failure.

GPU wise spend as much as you can. I have just put in a GTX 770 which has a factory overclock, boosts itself when needed and has 4Gb of ram on it. It also has a very efficient cooling system which is often overlooked but critical. It is a belting card and my parts guy was all but begging me to go multi monitor because he said with my single 22" monitor it was a waste.

Power supply. I would say you will need a quality 1000 watt supply minimum and again, spend as much as your build allows. Dodgy power equals dodgy PC and greater likelyhood of component failure (especially that expensive graphics card!)

Have fun!

Get an ssd, they are quick, thank me later.
You could consider a i5 4690 just as good as an i7 just no hyperthreading. You could splurge on a graph card now but you could also get a r9 290 and wait for the refresh early 2015.

My new i5 4570 is totally sufficient, better invest the spare bucks in a good Graphics Card, an oculus rift and some nice HOTAS or so.

Just have one monitor and an Oculus Rift?

Yeah I think I'm going to stay away from the Oculus rift. I have visions of putting the rift and headphones on and diving into a long session, only to take it off and discover my house has been robbed of everything, less my desk, chair and computer.

4690 is the refresh of the 4670 and is only 20 Euros more then the 4570 ( just ordered it myself this weekend). I also ordered an r9 290 because the increase in performance of the more expensive cards doesn't outweigh the cost in my opinion.
Better to buy 2 350 euro cards then 1 700 euro card.

I was going to suggest investing in an Oculus rift instead of 3 monitors. The rift will take up less space than the monitors and will cost less and give you the same effect if not more.

Unless you're doing something like video editing I think that a core i5 is plenty powerful enough for the game especially when its also equipped with a good graphics card.

judging by what CPU usage i've seen i5 something or other will be fine, but get the biggest bad ass GPU you can get your hands on..

and 8GB RAM is more than enough for gaming - saying you have more is just bragging rights because lets face it, unless you render massive high res 3D scenes or work with 4GB+ Photoshop files, you'll never need that much RAM!

I only have 8 gigs bit I want tot try tot set up a ramdisk.

Thanks for the info.

I'm nowhere near loaded enough to spend that cash just for a gaming machine. It's also a video editing suite, so I'll be stocking up on ram for Premiere Pro. But it's the ability to drive three screens that I was most concerned about.

Is it better to get two lesser GPUs running in SLI or one monster?
