Building a station

When squadrons become part of the game they should be able to have an option to build a space station in any solar system, or even if one player had enough resources and money the player can build one themselves and then they can get profit from the space station from people doing missions passenger transport and other things.

Like the shipping company suggestion -- no auto-cash features (or auto-pilot etc). The base gameplay is one-pilot-and-their-ship.

However I do like the ability for players to help drive things like space station building -- but see this as being done through more closer involvement with minor factions, who actually do the building and are responsible for running the station. This would require more than the "allied" status, perhaps an exclusive membership of one faction, earning influence points to spend on nominating and promoting faction decisions -- but crucially *not* giving players as individuals the keys to the vaults.

After all, in a shared universe, any player in open/group/solo will be able to interact with your station, and if a player can build a station, others would be able to tear it down -- which isn't the case with current stations, which are invunerable outside the storyline.

I like this and also there was an earlier suggestion about building surface bases, since those would be acheieved faster. It'd be good if groups could do this, but I think it'd make sense if the Pilots Federation did it first. Maybe when starting out, one of the missions could be to assist the federations effort to build a station..and it'd be sort of a tutorial on whats needed, steps, etc. Maybe that station never gets finished, since it's main goal is to how it's done..or maybe after one station is done, work starts on another, etc. (space is big...there's a lot of stations to be built) If you aren't busy, later in your command, you could always head out to assist one of those projects.

I agree. A big endless sandbox needs to allow players to "leave a footprint" in some form or another.

Even ramshackle little "pirate bases" or some such would add a huge new element to the game, and add on the severely lacking multiplayer experience.

I'd want something like this to require significant maintenance/upkeep attention and resources to maintain, and not appear in any systems which are already under control

I think it would be a great idea! Also, maybe the stations would have to be regularly supplied with some basic stuff. Would be also cool if certain stations (i.e. outposts on planets) would generate some kind of resources. Also, it would be cool to be able to generate a mission (if you have the $$) like the ones on the mission board for players (and maybe npcs) to supply your station with stuff.

What could be challenging is the sheer amount of materials needed to build a station. Considering how many hundreds of thousands of tonnes of materials are needed to repair the stations in the Pleiades, it seems even building a small station would be a massive undertaking.

I love the idea of small, independent outposts though, especially on planets. I've seen players talking about planetary mining before, a reintroduction from previous installments, and this would be a great way to implement it.

Can't be done, since ED relies on peer-to-peer networking and instances. There is no persistence. Your base will only be visible to players sharing your instance, and will disappear as soon as you (and your instance) log off.

Such things can only be done with a massive central single-instance server à la EvE Online, and that costs money (and subscription charges) to run.
