Building first explorer ship...

It depends if you have access to Engineers and Guardian kit.

If so then something like [this] would be my suggestion, this has everything fully engineered, generally with lightweight with a couple of exceptions.

From your initial specs I have also:

  • Lowered the power plant to a size 3A (A is important for thermal efficiency).
  • D rated life support to make it lighter.
  • D rated sensors to make them lighter and as A rated don't help for an explorer.
  • Added a Guardian frame shift drive booster.
  • Swapped your prismatic shields for standard shields to make them lighter and less power hungry.
  • Removed the mine launchers as they're pretty useless.
  • Added a plasma accelerator as it's useful to have something to shoot in order to do science.
  • Replaced the A rated shield booster with three E rated ones.

A mining laser is also useful to have, and if you are exploring and aren’t using limpets, then you don’t need a cargo rack. I replaced them with something much more useful, an AFMU and a surface scanner.

Lol, can't believe I didn't stick a scanner in it!

@War Eagle, definitely use Sea_Kerman's link over mine.

I'd suggest swapping it for an AspX so that you can fit a proper fuel scoop. :)

I like the DBX, but I find it quicker exploring in the AspX as I can fill up my tank pretty much in the time it takes the FSD to cool down. The DBX seems like it takes an age by comparison.

I appreciate the info and will change things out right now, as for having Engineering or Guardian stuff- not yet so these changes will help. The way I show it - not everything is available where I'm getting it built so I'll have to take it for a ride or two I guess.
Thanks for the help all.

Question when you bring stuff back to the ship and transfer it you need cargo racks don't you? Like one thing it will be for is collecting for the Meta Alloys required- I need cargo room for that right?

The only thing you really need unlock/engineering-wise is the FSD engineering and the FSD booster. All the other stuff is just nice to have

Of course your outfitting for engineer unlock will be different than your outfitting for exploring. Replace your AFMU with a cargo rack or something for the meta-alloy

Based on the meta alloy comment, if you're using it for Guardian/engineer unlocks at first (which I DO highly recommend) I'd go for something more like this: https://s.orbis.zone/2si3

I'm surprised you have prismatics avail, but that's probably overkill and just added mass for now.
Use at least one PDT for the Guardian sentinels (I use 3) but you don't need them otherwise.

You won't need the corrosion resistant racks for the meta alloy etc, ftr.
Don't overlook D rating sensors and life support.

I've never subscribed to the idea of d-rating your sensors on an explorer. When exploring, I fit the best sensors possible. :) Life support should always be d-rated, as you can synthesise air when needed anyway.

Mind you, I also take weapons and shields; I don't like to leave stuff behind.

Why?
I certainly don't suggest OP fight in that thing.
I generally use A rated LR on my combat ships.
Seems like a pointless hit to range/speed on a "first explorer ship".

Because the difference in range between A and D rated sensors is not significant, and I'd rather have the better sensors instead of get 0.1 Ly more range. My AspX can jump 44Ly without having stripped everything down, and that's fine for exploring. A first explorer ship doesn't really need to be optimised at all - I think my first explorer Cobra could only go 24Ly. It's not the range, it's the journey. ;) When you know that you like exploring, that's when you'll work out what is important to you for the long trips away. I decided that having a fully functioning ship with decent modules was important to me!

Well, to be fair, it's .3 in the build above.
What is that actual benefit you're trying to suggest for OP?

You have not described a benefit yet.
They only help to resolve ships in real space.
And that won't save anyone in that build from a determined ganker.
By then it's too late.
NPCs are not problem in either case.

I turn my sensors/shields/pd off the second I leave the bubble. D rated all the way. D rated engine focused PD is a nice touch sometimes...

Your DBX will be getting a couple more optional slots shortly OP, maybe spend the week doing some engineering before heading out!?

Fly safe!
