"building" scenery merge suggestion

I wasn't sure what to call this idea, but a lot of you 3D modelers know what I'm talking about.

I was thinking of ways to improve the game FPS and functionality and this was the first thing to pop into my head.

We already have the option to create a building, yes. But what if we also had the option to merge a bunch of objects together? What I mean is this. Let's say I place down 1,000 objects. But instead of making them into a building, I can just "merge" them all together. In this way, the game would then render all of those pieces as one single piece. Granted, this idea may only work with the art shapes. But if I have a bunch of those shapes making a giant shape, it would be nice to merge all of those into one piece then the game would render it as only one scenery piece. Not sure if that's possible, but it's a start. We already have the option to make buildings, so that's a step in the right direction.
Thoughts?

Never happen.
CAD software designed to actually do what you are asking a game to do struggles and crashes trying to Boolean Union far fewer objects than some people use to create a building. Coplaner surfaces are the devil.

I could give you cases where a union of a few simple shapes actually creates more polygons than the original pieces.

Then...

Then the game has to create new image and/or texture maps for you're new object.

This suggestion has been made before. It's not bad thinking.

However I feel that this already has been checked by the devs and like BJ says it does not work.

Ah, that is indeed correct. After merging all of your objects (whether they are the same piece or not), the game would then have to figure out how to render it as one single texture; something that is nearly impractical with current technology.
