Building the 2023 packs

We're hopefully looking at 4 more packs for 2023 now! I'd absolutely love to see the game go beyond that and into 2024 or even 2025, but I'm kind of reining that hope in a little. So I've come up with the four packs I'd most like to see next year.

Spring - Aviary/Birds Pack - Some of the Exhibit birds could be Walkthrough Exhibit birds
Bald Eagle (E)
Toco Toucan (E)
Scarlet Macaw(E)
Hyacinth Macaw (E)
African Grey Parrot (E)
Golden Eagle (E)
Rhinoceros Hornbill (E)
Sulpher Crested Cockatoo (E)
Kookaburra (E)
Shoebill Stork
Secretary Bird
Greater Roadrunner
Mute Swan
Scarlet Ibis
Australian Pelican
Grey Crowned Crane

Summer: Small Wonders- Theme - some general building theme much like conservation pack was.
Tasmanian Devil
Kiwi
Crested Porcupine
Coatimundi
King Cobra (E)

Fall: Jungles and Forests
Sloth
Tree Kangaroo
Red River Hog
Fossa
Lar Gibbon
Howler Monkey
Aye-Aye
Chameleon (E)

Winter: Taiga/Tundra- Not sure on the theme. I would have gone highlands/bavarian theme but I needed to get the walrus in.
Walrus
Wolverine
Spectacled Bear
Muskox
Snowy Owl (E)

Anniversary animal: Dromedary or Black Rhino

I really did want to try to get a Baboon in there for all the primate fans, but working it the way I did, they just barely missed the cut. but they were on my radar for sure.

If i am not mistaken, new the pattern is.
  • Themed Scenery Pack (Too random to predict)
  • Biome based for Animal Pack. (Tropical forest, Dessert, Tundra, Islands, Temperate forest, Marine) this enough for 3 years because we only get 2 a year.

Just a few of my ideas (*Eternally subject to change).

[]Islands Animal Pack[]
  • American Flamingo -------------- Phoenicopterus ruber ------------ [148]
  • Fossa -------------------------------- Cryptoprocta ferox ---------------- [11]
  • Hawaiian Goose ------------------ Branta sandvicensis -------------- [223]
  • Japanese Raccoon Dog -------- Nyctereutes viverrinus ----------- [69]
  • Little Blue Penguin --------------- Eudyptula minor ------------------- [77]
  • Matschie's Tree-Kangaroo ----- Dendrolagus matschiei ---------- [61]
  • Tasmanian Devil ------------------ Sarcophilus harrisii --------------- [1]
*I dedicated three spots to the Oceania region; this is ideal to me, with any more or less being to much or too little. Furthermore, I feel each animal should represent a different island.
*I chose the Matschie's Tree-Kangaroo over the much more popular Goodfellow's Tree-Kangaroo [13] due to preference; I much prefer the look of the Matschie's and there is precedence for such choices being made (Siamang VS Lar Gibbon).

[]Daylight Pack[]
  • Gray Crown Crane -------------- Balearica regulorum ----------------- [24]
  • Mute Swan ------------------------ Cygnus olor ---------------------------- [60]
  • Northwestern Blackbuck ------- Antilope cervicapra rajputanae ---- [36]
  • South American Coati ---------- Nasua nasua --------------------------- [10]
*Ideally would feature lots of new plants, favoring greenery over structures and filling in areas where vegetation choices are lacking. Presumably would still contain some build objects; gardening theme perhaps, possibly greenhouse elements or solar power roof tops.
*Usually I don't care much about the Exhibit animals, but if we could get more butterflies here that would be awesome.

[]Drylands Animal Pack[]
  • African Spurred Tortoise -------- Centrochelys sulcata -------------- [90]
  • Collared Peccary ----------------- Dicotyles tajacu --------------------- [58]
  • Dromedary Camel --------------- Camelus dromedarius ------------- [20]
  • Hamadryas Baboon ------------- Papio hamadryas ------------------- [16]
  • Yellow-Footed Rock-Wallaby
  • Saiga Antelope -------------------- Saiga tatarica ----------------------- [30]
  • Sand Cat --------------------------- Felis margarita ---------------------- [115]
*My biggest concern here would be the excess of African animals.

[]Mountain Pack[]
  • Markhor -------------------------- Capra falconeri --------------------- [26]
  • Pallas's Cat --------------------- Otocolobus manul ------------------ [47]
  • Spectacled Bear -------------- Tremarctos ornatus ----------------- [29]
  • Rock Hyrax -------------------- Procavia capensis ------------------- [78]
*Ideally would feature a genuine Gondola Ride with cable suspension, not the "rollercoaster" version currently in PZ. Honestly, this is the big reason I went with Scenery Pack over Animal Pack.
*My best guess for a build theme would be a Tibetan temple or something, perhaps with lots of references to Himalayan myths like the Yeti.

[]Tundra Pack[]
  • Musk-Ox ------------------------- Ovibos moschatus ------------------- [15]
  • Trumpeter Swan --------------- Cygnus buccinator ------------------- [329]
  • Wolverine ------------------------ Gulo gulo ------------------------------- [8]
  • Walrus ---------------------------- Odobenus rosmarus ----------------- [12]
*Much like the Arctic Pack, there is a severe lack of Exhibit Animal options... the most likely candidate is some kind of bird for a walkthrough exhibit... but I'm not sure which, if any, would actually work.
*I'm not so sure of building options... perhaps an Inuit or Native American build set or something based on a fishing village.

Last, but not least, a few of my WIP ideas:

[]Tropical Woodlands Animal Pack[]
  • Lar Gibbon ----------------------- Hylobates lar ------------------------- [5]
  • Geoffroy's Spider Monkey --- Ateles geoffroyi ----------------------- [47]
  • Red Junglefowl ----------------- Gallus gallus -------------------------- [329]
  • Red River Hog ------------------ Potamochoerus porcus ------------ [7]
  • Ocelot ----------------------------- Leopardus pardalis ----------------- [27]
  • ???
  • ???

[]Temperate Woodlands Animal Pack[]
  • African Civet --------------------- Civettictis civetta
  • Reeves's Muntjac -------------- Muntiacus reevesi ------------------ [102]
  • Serval ----------------------------- Leptailurus serval -------------------- [30]
  • Sichuan Takin ------------------- Budorcas taxicolor tibetana ------- [19]
  • Virginia Opposum ------------- Didelphis virginiana ------------------ [223]
  • ???
  • ???

I've mentioned this elsewhere, but I would hesitate to say there's a "new pattern". I'm still expecting the next pack to be an animal pack, and in terms of theming, it could change again next year as it changed this year. IMO I think they swapped the animal/scenery pack order this year to market during Halloween, since the Twilight Pack was largely Halloween-themed.

Drylands animal pack
Porcupine ⭐
Secretary bird
Hamadryas baboon
Dromedary
Echidna
Serval

Yaa one theme pack could be related to a festival and holiday. One theme pack can be conservation/ zoo related. Animal packs should be biomes.

Children's Zoo / Education Pack

Monkey, porcupine, goat, domestic waterfowl or barnyard bird. Playground equipment. Merry-go-round. Exhibit could be sloth, parrots, goldfish, or lizard. No pack will ever make everyone happy, but I feel like this would be a pretty good line-up for a scenery pack.

Here are my suggestions for what I consider probably the last year of updates for Planet Zoo, these DLCs are in release order.

Thinking on it, I wouldn't be shocked by a Coastal or Aquarium pack. Manatee, Walurus, and Pelican are all highly requested species, and there are others like rays or nurse sharks which could round it out, and if interspecies exhibits continue we could potentially make decent tropical aquariums...

I've been trying to come up with 4 more packs that would include as many as possible of my most wanted animals and i realize there probably are not going to be enough packs to fit them all, specially with a couple more of scenery packs left :(

Only ones i can think of are:

Drylands:
  • African crested porcupine
  • Dromedary camel
  • Secretary bird (because why not and also please)
  • Collared peccary
  • Hamadryas baboon
  • Sand cat? Black backed jackal? (this is a frontier pack after all must have a couple of carnivores...)
  • Addax? (maybe not because too much ungulates / hervibores unless the dromedary is an anniversary animal, then i can see it taking it's place), Greater rhea (two habitat birds in one pack sounds to good to be true for a Frontier pack but one can dream; the secretary is of higher priority for me though), Patagonian mara? (two rodents in one pack also seems unlikely), Saiga antelope? (some love for central Asia cold deserts), Nile crocodile? (Frontier loves crocs and we have no african croc i wouldn't be mad if we get this one in a desert pack but should not be the first choice) Perentie? (they seem to be expanding the Ocenian roster and we haven't got any other non-crocodilian reptile in any DLC), African Spurred Tortoise? (we haven't got any tortoises either and it would add variety to this group of animals since we only have two giant ones)
  • Ex: Cobras (my first choice but if they somehow make vultures work for the WE then those are what i prefer)

Islands (scenery) Pack: Polynesian/SEA architecture
  • Tasmanian devil (no brainer)
  • Kiwi
  • Tree kangaroo
  • Fossa
  • Ex: panther chameleon or tuatara

Tropical Rainforest Animal Pack (very SA heavy so this roster is extremely unlikely and more of a wishlist)
  • Two toed sloth
  • Ocelot
  • Howler monkey
  • Red river hog
  • Mantled guereza (two primates in one pack, i must be crazy)
  • Southamerican coati
  • Scarlet ibis (yeah i know not at all likely but i really want this bird)
  • WE: Macaws

I know we've beaten this topic to death then resurrected its corpse, but I seriously think we'll get an aviary pack in 2023. I can at least see some smaller birds like budgies, lorikeets, hummingbirds, and the Laughing Kookaburra using the walkthrough exhibits.

Flight and Feathers Pack (Spring/late March): Released alongside a free update that incorporates additional mesh building pieces to the current sets and two additional wall sets ("fine" mesh and piano wire). Also includes some old school menagerie/aviary-style roofing, railings, and foliage. New option for a larger exhibit that is not walk-through. * below indicates walk-through
  1. Toco toucan* (headliner)
  2. Bald eagle
  3. Peregrine falcon
  4. Snow owl
  5. Barred owl
  6. Rhinoceros hornbill
  7. Sulphur-crested cockatoo*
  8. Macaws (scarlet and hyacinth)*
  9. Mandarin duck
  10. Scarlet ibis
Islands (Summer/mid-June): Includes a tropical/island-themed building set and scenery items, additional foliage, and new "volcanic" rock type. Free update would add additional restaurant types (and add some vegan options).
  1. Tasmanian devil (headliner)
  2. Matschie's tree kangaroo
  3. Marine iguana
  4. Fossa
  5. Walk-through Exhibit: Budgies
Deserts (Fall/mid-October):
  1. Dromedary camel (headliner)
  2. Hamdryas baboon
  3. African-crested porcupine
  4. Serval
  5. Greater roadrunner
  6. Collared peccary
  7. White-nosed coati
  8. Exhibit: Burrowing owls
Anniversary animals: 4 years, 4 animals! Plus a free update with generic zoo items that are glaringly missing from the game. (Unlikely, but hey. A person can dream.)
  1. Black rhinoceros
  2. North American river otter
  3. Wolverine
  4. Kiwi
Tropical Animals (Fall/mid-October): At this point, I'm assuming it'll be pure animal packs. This will help round out South America, so pardon the skew there!
  1. Cotton-top tamarin (headliner)
  2. Red river hog
  3. Wolf's monkey
  4. Ocelot
  5. Tamandua
  6. Howler monkey
  7. Silver langur
  8. Walk-through Exhibit: Sloth
Temperate Animals (Winter/mid-December):
  1. American black bear (headliner)
  2. Bobcat
  3. Black-footed ferret
  4. Aardwolf
  5. Colobus monkey
  6. Sloth bear
  7. Reeve's muntjac
  8. Exhibit: Kookaburra (or tawny frogmouth)

But why? This is an animal bigger than a meerkat.

The honest answer is because I was exhausted when I got to that point and probably should have waited to post until the morning. I wasn't fully thinking straight, hah. I'll probably update it later today.

EDIT: Replaced it with an Aussie bird to flesh that out more!

Rainforest animal pack
-Red river hog(More pig diversity and a popular zoo animal.)
-Red forest buffalo(A colorful looking buffalo with big fluffy ears. Could also be replaced for Banteng, Anoa or Gaur.)
-Northern Tamandua(Ant eater diversity and I love Tamanduas :) )
-Hoffman two-toed sloth(We need another key member of the xenartha family)
-Spider monkey(Any species will do for me, we could use some more monkey species from South America. Could also be a howler monkey)
-Goodfellows tree kangaroo(A well known tree kangaroo to add some animal variety and it's a beloved animal overall.)
-Sumatran rhino(It's a pretty unique and rare species of rhino, so yes!)
E;
-Several species of hummingbirds

Island pack
-North-Island brown kiwi(More bird variety, and the number 1 representative of New Zealand)
-Tasmanian devil(Pretty much the representative of Tasmania)
-Aye-Aye(We didn't get it in the twilight pack and I think a good choice as it's quite the unique looking lemur)
-Fossa(Madagascar's only land predator and a very welcome addition.)
E:
-Spectacled flying fox(More bat species are needed)

Desert animal pack
-Addax(A desert antelope, can't really go without it right?)
-Dromedary camel(The final camelids and the one all planet zoo lovers would really want.)

-Hamadryas baboon(A desert/arid type of monkey. A definite yes to bring in some monkey/baboon variety.)
-Somali wild ass(The last of the equines and a first donkey. A beautiful, striking and rare wild species of donkey.)
-Perentie(A new large monitor lizard, quite unique to Australia. A welcome Australian addition)
E;
-Thorny devil

Mountain animal pack
-Markhor(Well known curled horned, quite a large wild goat that is definitely a must for zoos :) )
-Golden takin(Another well know caprid, and a unique and overal really fascinating and weird wonder for zoos)
-Gelada(Mountain living monkey, a zootycoon2 animal, who could say no?)
-Ethiopian wolf(Another rare African wolf, and the last canine for PZ, or perhaps the alpine marmot as alternative)
-Spectacled bear(The final bear for PZ should be the spectacled bear from South America.)
-Darwin Rhea(A must have! more bird variety and the only way I could see the Darwin Rhea getting added)
-Mountain tapir(Quite a fuzzy, small and unique looking tapir, though, there might be better alternatives.)
E;
