Bulletin Board Missions - I have an Offer You Can Not Refuse

I'm completely befuddled by how some missions from the bulletin board function. I'm at the system's main station. I pick up a mission to kill pirates working in the system and since I want to build my reputation with the system authority and do something more than space trucking, I take the misssion. I go to one USS and find a pirate. One kill and I'm on my way. Second USS is a funeral precession. The next USS changes my mission without presenting me an option to reject the offier. The NPC changed my mission. The original mission would have awarded me approximately 22,000 CR. My reward for finding this NPC is a significant reduction in possible reward (1,200 CR) and no option to reject their offer. If I was originally trying to raise my reputation within the system I took the mission, why would there not be an option to reject the offer? Oh by the way, killing the NPC will get you tagged as wanted and doesn't restore the original mission. I go to the closest outpost and pay my fine.

So now I follow the mission to the different system, because I can't abandon the now changed mission. The mission takes me to a pirate outpost. I'm thinking to myself, I don't want to play as a pirate. I would prefer to be known for accomplishing something else. I'm playing as a space trucker right now because that is what pays the bills. Bonus play, the mission takes me to a station that is currently full and I must wait for a place to land. Time to get a cup of coffee as I should be safe within the no fire zone.

Coffee was a good plan. Chance to step away for a moment and think about what it is I'm trying to accomplish here.

Station now has a spot for me. Let's see what the bulletin board has to say. Well the exact opposite of what I orginally set out to perform has occured. I'm trying to build my reputation with the Federation, not reduce it.

Maybe I should just go do something more productive like paint the bathroom.

As I said earlier, I'm completely befuddled. I set out to do something that should logically end up with a desired outcome only to have the game make me an offer I can't refuse resulting in me achieving exactly the opposite outcome from my original intent.

"Some may know you as an ally; others will call you a pirate, a bounty hunter, a smuggler, an explorer, an assassin, a hero... Fly alone or with friends, fight for a cause or go it alone; your actions change the galaxy around you in an ever unfolding story."

My humble question is this, If I choose to fight for a cause, why would I want to help out the other guys?

I really do need to go paint the bathroom.

First up, go to nav beacons to find pirates.

Secondly, I've never seen this mission option as I don't go to USS unless it's for assassin missions, but I'm sure you can decline the offer. Someone else may be able to explain how.

The USS presented itself while on my way to the nav beacon. I was applying what I humbly believed would make sense since I accepted a mission to kill pirates. And the first USS had a pirate in it to kill.

You don't actively accept or decline the alternative offer: once you've got the target number of items or kills you simply choose where to turn the mission in, and with whom, in order to claim your cash.

I'll give it a try again. But I do not remember there being a "Back" button. The only option I had available was "Abandon". Guess I could have just toggled off to a different screen and kept killing Pirates, but the original mission was no longer in my transaction list.

Yes. I understand. But if you're doing kill count missions then avoid the USS from now on. This problem will go away. It's faster to kill pirates at the beacon as well.

You don't need to do the changed mission! Just carry on with the original mission, the only annoying thing is, if you have made 1 or more kills towards your original mission and the NPC changes your mission it resets the counter. However you carry on regardless and you complete the original mission, then get the bounties and the payment from the mission. :D
