Burned Alive

Hey all,

Newcomer to the forum and beginner in terms of Elite compared to some of the hours clocked by some players (only on about 100+ myself).

I'm after some advice.

I was hopping through jumps last night when I came out of Hyperdrive confronted by a 'star' which was ultra bright and extremely colourful - blues, purples, whites etc. It seemed to have a white tail emigrating from two opposite sides - I assumed at first it may be a ring that I couldn't see all the way around.

It looked beautiful but destroyed my ship within a couple minutes as I couldn't get away from its heat quick enough and felt as though I was being sucked in/unable to evade.

If I happen across something like this again, what am I to do and what was this 'star'?

sounds either as a neutron star or a white dwarf.

you can use them to boost your jumprange, too.

but generally: throttle down directly after entry. don't fly into its arms. scan them. jump on :)

NEVER fly IN through the cone, fly OUT through the cone!

You can see the star type in the top right info panel when you hit jump, even if you miss that you should see the telltale lines coming off the sides of the star when in hyperspace, if it look like a "hugger" throttle down. As Alec's poster shows you can boost your next jump range with these, try aiming for the very end of the cone as too close to the star and it'll grab you!

Jumping with orbit lines switched on also helps, just stay outside of the line around the star. they are very far out from those little stars, so I can see how easy it would be to cook yourself without knowing where was safe.

I would say avoid them altogether until you gain some experience. They are very beautiful stars but extremely dangerous it takes a little skill and a little luck to use them to boost your FSD. I say again, try to avoid them altogether until you gain some more experience jumping from system to system. Good luck Commander fly safe!

Did it look like this:

That vid above is a bug where crashing to main menu in a star put you inside the arms which is a 90% death chance if you can't high-wake out. I was advised 0 throttle until the FSD is charged is the way to escape but too late (already dead).

Basically if you see it again throttle to 0, turn away and don't get near it. If you hit it try to avoid the arms, not being in supercruise whilst in the arms means pretty much instant death. Throttle 0 during hyperspace is generally solid advice at all times regardless.
Their grav field is high yet it affects a small area which means you fly pretty fast around them compared with other stars which can lead to accidents.

Sometimes I seek out neutrons to extend my jump range but when jumping round the bubble I like to avoid things like this in my route plan (usually white dwarfs in the bubble) because I like to just relax and make cups of tea etc when I'm just jumping around. You can make the route planner avoid these stars by clicking "Map" and then filtering by star type. I tend to select the stars between M -> O because those are all scoopable stars with a fuel scoop. White dwards/Non-sequence stars I leave unticked because those are the ones that can kill you if you're not paying attention. L and smaller stars are not harmful but you can't fuel scoop them so I avoid those too.

New player huh?

Have you been out to see the Neutron star next to Hutton Orbital? It's a small one and doesn't show on the maps until you get really close. Just keep going, you'll see it when you get close enough. Just keep going.
