First: It's not a glorious job, it's not a glamorous job and you won't become famous. It's a job that needs to be done and if done right you can make a nice profit. Just don't expect to make hundreds of millions in a few hours, but you don't need to.
It's nothing for CMDRs who dream of victories and battles or want to get rich fast and want the easy way in luxury and comfort.
What is a bush pilot?
A bush pilot is a CMDR who provides services to small outposts in the edge regions of the bubble. A CMDR who hauls commodities, passengers and supplies goods that are in desperate need.
Missions provided by factions from small orbital outposts and planetary bases is the day to day work of a bush pilot.
You need a good ship for the job.
A ship with a long jump range and a big fuel tank. A small ship is good, medium size ships can be used but are often too expensive and too big for the jobs.
The ship should have enough internal space for a class 4 passenger cabin and 1 or two cargo racks.
Depending on the pilot the ship should be able to survive some hostile interaction or be able to not get interdicted in the first place. The systems in at the edge of the bubble often don't have the luxury of high security.
A cheap ship and a good CMDR is all that is needed to be successful.
You need a base station with outfitting.
Being a bush pilot is all about flexibility and using the right tool in the right time.
A base station can provide the needed options. With often used modules in storage and maybe a medium sized ship for those emergency supply missions.
You need to be friendly to everybody.
You don't have to work for everybody if you don't want to, but you don't want to get hostile with factions out there. The last thing you want are hostile spaceships trying to interfere with you while you try to get some work done.
You want to be allied to factions as they will offer you better jobs. Good paying jobs.
The things you will do.
You will have to take what ever you get offered. Cargo missions, passenger missions, data missions. You won't be stacking a lot of missions and as a result you don't need a big ship. One mission here an other there. Maybe, if you are lucky two missions.
But you are not here to make a fortune, you are here to help the inhabitants of the edge worlds.
Passenger missions. Transporting a few passengers to nearby systems. Transporting VIPs to some tourist destinations. VIPs in this case are probably just normal people by the standards of the core worlds. They all are most of the time happy with economy cabins and very rarely you will need a cabin that is better than a class 4 economy cabin.
Most of the habitants of the edge don't expect luxury or even first class treatment.
Passenger transportation missions can require more passenger seats, in this case changing one cargo rack to a passenger cabin is needed.
Cargo and information missions. Often a few tons of things need to be transferred from one system to a nearby system. Nothing spectacular, nothing dangerous. Just stuff that needs to be transported from A to B.
Emergency supply. Often factions in those edge systems get into trouble. Famine and outbreaks are something that happens a lot. In such situations you can make some profit by providing food and medicine.
Most of the time you will transport passengers and a bit of cargo.
Keep an eye on the system status.
Famine, outbreak and boom are where you can make money and are where you are needed. Knowing where your services as a CMDR are needed is important.
The Reward.
By now you probably ask yourself why you should do that. You won't get famous. You won't get rich fast.
The reward is freedom.
Freedom to do what ever you want.
Freedom from having to earn enough to support a big ship.
Freedom from grinding to get that big ship everybody is talking about.
Freedom to fly the ship you want.
Get out of your comfort zone and make the galaxy a better place.
Fly save CMDR!
