But he fired first officer

Was just racking up some kills at a nav beacon, as you do, when another message came in along the lines of "tasty cargo, give it to me". I targetted the fella and he opened fire, beams streaming all over the place - above me, below me and side to side, he hadn't actually managed to land a shot when I opened fire. So now, I'm the criminal and got destroyed in under a minute by the local feds.

You live and learn. I know now I have to wait until I'm actually hit no matter how obvious it is that the the guy wants me dead.

It should be a crime just to be that bad at shooting that you can't hit someone right ni front of you.

One hit is supposedly ok isn't it? I like the fact that NPC can provoke but it should work for us too but I think they just ignore our fire misses.

While I accept and totally understand your point about how irrational the mechanic is, you have to either keep the target in your reticule for about ten seconds while your basic scan autocompletes, or take a hit to your shields before you can safely open fire.

You must wait your scaner to indentifit the target as wanted if the target is not start shooting first.

I would love the bribery mechanic be brought back into ED this would allow us to wrack up a certain level of fines and then write them off with a suitable 'donation' ;)

One thing I would like to know (did not tested it yet), if the ship which interdicted you is marked "Wanted" at the moment of interdiction.
Because if you have Anaconda with more than 400 tonnes of cargo, relatively weak shields and plenty of turreted weapons, it is a pretty stupid idea firstly to rotate whole ship and wait for scanning. And almost impossible to get an agile attacking ship into the field of view.

You realize had you opened fire on the NPC (not landing a shot) and it returned fire hitting you, the feds would have been your ally.
So the rules are the same for both of you in the E:D universe in this particular case.

Working as intended, there is such thing as a warning shot (which I'm sure the NPC wasn't trying to do that but it's still valid as a mechanic).

I wasn't interdicted, he appeared at a nav point where I was hunting. He wasn't at all agile, he just sat there. I'm not even sure he became wanted at all as I was too busy trying to get the hell outa there.

They definitely waren't warning shots :) All valid points though. I'm not complaining anyway, just saying it's a lesson learned so maybe others can learn from it.

It's hard for me to miss a static target from 500M with gimballed cannons though Ism ;)
