General / Off-Topic But who's actually interested in Space?

I sort of have been all my life.

Bought a scope, arrived few day's ago, It's twice the size I thought it was going to be LOL, Been cloudy since :( Typical

Going to a local spot on Wednesday to spend the evening with the BBC and Prof. Brian Cox (D:Ream) for Stargazing Live (starts Tuesday)

Got a kewl app for android, assume its also on I-Bricks. Google Sky Map. Load it up and it uses your GPS, plus gyroscope to show you the stars. And you can find the stars in game from it... Like where formalhaut is, or Altiar and Arcturus according to your location. Think Altair was low down to the west at 8pm last night. And you then think, what would it really be like.

Difficult, since you can't post in the next layer up :p!

As for the question, I'm actually a professional astrophysicist, paid by NASA to look for black holes in nearby galaxies using a mixture of telescopes: the Hubble Space Telescope, and X-ray telescopes called Chandra, Swift, and XMM-Newton.

So yeah, I'm quite interested in space :p!

Another spacey person here - professional planetary astronomer working with the NASA/ESA/ASI Cassini mission and hypervelocity impact physics..

I'm very interested in space, obsessed some people might say. :D

I got a telescope a few weeks ago, I've learnt how to use it (new to astronomy), but typically, most nights we get cloud cover, or I'm busy, so I haven't had chance to use it yet.

HOPING, but knowing the British weather clear skies will come around 1am when all are at home in bed.

Bikky - I've been fascinated by space ever since I was a kid and used to read through the astronomy section of the Times Atlas.

I currently have a Skywatcher Explorer 130PM (only a 5-incher), it's quite a good beginner scope but I'd love something bigger. This is one hobby where size really does matter ;)

I'm also going to one of the Stargazing Live events in a couple of weeks, fingers crossed for clear skies :)

Where is Drew Wager when you need him, chair of his own astro-club or something similar ;)

I was hoping to catch Jupiter last month as it was in opposition, but every time I prepped my scope it was overcast :(

Another spacey person here. I've had my six-inch reflector for almost ten years now. A lot of fun has been had.
Excited about the comet they're expecting late this year, just a few months before we'll be playing E: D :smilie:

Yup, another space interested person, Got my 6" reflector scope (only ever get chance to use it in the freezing winter when it's dark enough - so not that many days a year!).

Always remember the wife not believing that Saturn actually did have rings, she thought I was fooling her with a picture! :rolleyes:

Google sky maps are pretty cool as well.

On a separate note, it's quite alarming to see there are a number of new members who've already posted considerably more in a few days than I have in 3 years!

Mind you it does help that we actually have something to talk about now.... :)

I've been an amateur astronomer for most of my life. I can't even remember a time when I wasn't fascinated by the night sky with all its incredible wonders.

I own a couple of telescopes (the bigger one is a 6" Newtonian reflector; I like being able to move around effortlessly, so heavier scopes are out of the question) and a bunch of binoculars.

I also envy people who live in more southern latitudes and are able to observe the sky in warm weather. When it's dark here, it's also very cold most of the time. :smilie:

I've been interested in space pretty much my whole life. My interest in space is what got me interested in the Elite games to begin with. I even create space art, mostly related to real world objects.

Hi Bikky I expect you have these already but "planets" and "cosmic" are great (and free!) too :)
