Buy DK2, Hold for VIVE, or Hold for CV1?? What should I do??

So, I don't have any VR...I haven't even tried any. I have been waiting and waiting to get one. I was ready to jump and buy the Rift back in March, because I kept hearing so many good things about Elite's feeling with it.

"Hold on for few months!" They said. "The Oculus Rift will be launching before Christmas!" They said.

And here we are again, in a position of not knowing when they are releasing the darn thing. We've been waiting for years now of push backs...

Then the VIVE comes along...supposedly better and in a more completed state, but hey! Is not available either, and we don't even know yet when it will be! Supposedly before the CV1.

But I'm a little too old to believe anything the marketers say, specially after hearing the "it's almost done!" way too many times by now.

I want to experience Elite, just like you guys that talk about so much on how the stations look, and the ships, and the planets and the rings and "ohh, don't miss the combat zone!" -while I watch with hate and envy from afar with my money on hand- because I want to jump in the VR wagon as well!

So, I turn to you, experts of the VR, with your experience in the matter, and if you were in my shoes, what the heck would you do if you didn't have your cool VR right now?

  • Would you buy the DK2 -because better to have something now instead of waiting for the uncertain future?

  • Would you hold for Vive because is going to be better than the Rift or - at least supposedly earlier?

  • Would you hold for the CV1 because is the best of both choices??

or, simply do nothing at the moment because Elite is a mess right now with the Oculus anyways and who knows what's to happen with the Vive???

Confused and frustrated here!!! Vote, comment and help me to make a decision please!!

Thanks!!

p.s. It wouldn't come as a surprise if you find the most ignorant statement in some of the above lines. After all, I am widely illiterate on VR, computers, and all things related. I'm just a layman consumer. I like to flight my ship and I was told not to update Windows 10. That's as much technology I handle for Elite. I leave it at that and be happy and contempt about it! So, no, didn't read that article on Wired that says <latest development here>. Thanks!

Both Vive and Cv1 will be be great in ED and better in every way than DK2.
And they will both be available in a few months. Silly poll.

If you have money to burn, just buy a DK2 today and the others later. Why even ask?

I'd probably go for the CV1 Rift...mostly because the Vive comes with extras I'm not interested in since I'm not all that keen on walking around in a room with my eyes covreed... I think it is too soon for game devs to make that a worthwhile experience for a complete title.

With supersampling and a few other graphical tweaks suggested in the dk2 setup thread on here the DK2 is amazing in Elite. for me its good enough that i wont be rushing out to get a CV1 when it is released. If you don't have the computer power to run at 2+ times the resolution then wait. the dk2 looks really ugly in native resolution. I only use it for ED really because other games I've tried look really bad. ED works like a dream though and I literally only bought it to use with ED so I've been very happy with it.

Overall you would definately be better off waiting for any commercial VR but if you absolutely cannot wait and have enough power under the hood the DK2 is amazing.

Having used one since year dot and mainly docking on outposts head tracking for me is the key and will two cameras kill my cores or work as required?

I went through the same problem.
Do I buy the DK2 now, or just wait....
Well chances are the CV1 is going to need,
beefy system to run it, so that may cost even more to do.
If you plan on getting dk2 I would try to get one soon, they are creeping up in price.
I was lucky and got one for 400 w/leap motion and I know I can get 600 for it now.
I love my dk2 for CQC, it feels like cheating when flying against others.

I agree with this.

They may have better resolution but chances are they will be a while
filling orders. And you will need a strong pc to run either.

Oh btw, Elite isn't broken, I run it on Direct mode, ok, I am getting less than
optimal fps but I don't mind the judder at all.

The sensible thing to do would be to wait for reviews (both consumer and expert reviews) of both HMDs. Although I have a feeling I won't take my own advise and will just pull the trigger as soon as the Vive goes up for sale :)

I couldn't help notice how in tonight's live stream, when David was asked about the Oculus SDK, he immediately started talking about the Vive and how great it was. Perhaps I'm reading too much into this, but I'm getting the impression that FD are favouring the Vive.

Definitely don't get DK2 now. Preferably wait for both Vive and Rift to come out, and buy based on reviews and possible exclusives.

Consider this, do you want VR now?
Or in about 6mths when your order is being filed?
I got mine this week(dk2), is it the best? No.
Is it the most trouble free to use? No.
If I had the chance again, would I buy it again? Hell yes!
Now if you will excuse me, gonna jump in my condor, and dance around CQC.
<Big Smile>

Seriously, who would wait for something not tried? why VIVE?
I'm using the DK2 and will wait for the Oculus CV1.
All the others are just clones with no fantasy. Vive stays up because of Valve, Oculus stays up because of the builder Palmer.
Palmer Lucky build the OCULUS FOR THE GAMERS, all the others to take away money from OCULUS. IMHO

I recently bought the dk2 for elite , but I could only get the 0.7 runtime which no longer supports extended mode and so doesn't run elite anymore, so the headset is gathering dust. I should have done my homework. It was great trying it at the launch party though

Who cares about who copied who. In the end, all that matters is the quality of the product, and we'll have to wait for all the main headsets to be released to decide which is most deserving of our money. I don't owe Oculus anything, if the Vive is better then this is what I'll get. That being said, I do think the Rift will be slightly better, but we'll see.

I'm going to wait until cv1 release and then decide which one to buy depending on price, ergonomics and supported games.

You've tried the CV1?

NO, but it comes out from a development (DK1-DK2-CB), and all OCULUS was available to everybody for years taking and working on PRO and CONS of the hardware and software side.
And OCULUS is sticking on asking the developers to develop their games/softwares on a unique starting Platform configuration, where the consumer will be sure 100% to have the VR experience.
Taking the VIVE or whatever device, is like taking the DK1 of Oculus.
Yes for sure the Consumer will have the advantage of more devices to choose from, but better have a good hardware start, with a company with experience.
My choice will always be OCULUS for VR and Microsoft for AR.
But this is what I think. Not to be followed.;)

My main concern is the "try before you buy" issue. Even if it's available from retail stores at some point I doubt very much that every branch of Currys-PC World is going to have a demo station of both a Rift and a Vive, for example. So that leaves gaming shows/festivals and they don't happen that often*. And I'd rather see ED in it as opposed to the regular demo to alleviate any fears of motion sickness. On the plus side at least if I had issues I would likely get a good price on fleabay especially whilst stock was still scarce. Or will they have a "not happy return in 14 days" or "motion sickness" returns policy?

* HTC Vive will be at Insomnia Birmingham in Dec https://insomniagamingfestival.com/sponsors/ the blurb says "Imagine standing on the bridge of a starship rocketing across the galaxy" - do we think this means they will be demo-ing ED, That Other Space Game or something else?

Could you not find the older runtimes, or is something preventing you from installing them?
