Buy oculus now, or wait for consumer version?

I've given up on makeshift vr for now, mostly because the video quality and fov are absolute dookey, and I know first-hand the oculus is better. So I intend to get an oculus, sooner rather than later. What do you guys think? Should I buy one right now, knowing I'll use it all the time? Or should I wait until the consumer version comes out?

Some notes in case it matters:

-I wear glasses. Can I wear them AND the oculus, and if not will a lack of glasses hurt?
-amd athlon ii x4 640 processor, overclocked is about 3300ghz, which is the low end of the specs of the Intel I5 4590 (3300-3700)
-amd HD Radeon 6700 series gpu. I'm kind of fudging this one, I know I need two hdmi ports, and if I convert my dvi to hdmi all that's left is the vga, so I'm pretty much hotswapping displays if I want to play other games (why would I though?) I can overclock it pretty far, for what it's worth (don't know the actual figures.)
-I plan on using it for other games when I break from ED, including some vr demos and some supported games.

Thoughts?

dont waste your money, but that being said if you find a used dk2 for like $200 and you feel its money well spent, why not?

but here is the situation

you need way more computer..

4.0ghz, gtx 970 minimum (or 295x or 980, or more!)

are you using water on that 4590?
might want to get an all in one water cooler and bring the ghz up a ton.
im not familliar with that cpu though, but im sure it can get up there.

what motherboard?

glasses is dependent, some can some cant.
google the dimensions of the inner and see if you can figure out how your glasses/face would work.

CV is ages away, but vive is around the corner...depends on your cash flow i suppose...

I'm really curious about the glasses question too. I tried an Occulus last year with Eve Valkyrie. I had two goes, one with glasses and one without. It was really uncomfortable with glasses on and actually things looked fine without them. Mind you, I didn't have to read any small text in Valkyrie.

there is also IPD which plays huge in to it.

id also make sure you are in the acceptable range 60-70 or so natively. 63-65 is ideal i believe.
just more pita if you have to buy separators and such

Sorry, I should be more clear. The processor isn't the 4590, I was saying I can safely oc to the lower end of that processor. For some reason I can't push it further without crashing instantly, which is weird.

Motherboard is nothing special, I'll determine the model when I get home.

Is there no one running below the recommended gpu specs?

At this point you should probably wait.
Maybe get the Vive in November, instead of the Rift CV in March(?).

You will need a PC upgrade as well.

Save the $400 now and apply that towards PC upgrades at the end of the year, maybe you can get some awesome Black Friday sales.

I love my DK2, it has provided me with endless fun for almost a year now, and I hate talking anyone out of getting one.... but if I were in your shoes I'd try and remain patient. The consumer version VR headsets will be worth the wait.... but you need a machine to handle them.

Good Luck with your decision!

Cheers,
-Jericho-

PS: I wore glasses and contacts for nearly 2 decades (until I got LASIK)..... are contacts not an option for many? I recall weren't very expensive.

If oculus is supported, HoloLens will be supported aswell i assume.

I would rather have reallife holographic icons surrounding me in the real world.

I would wait, and see if HoloLens will be supported, and buy that one.

'Reallife holographic icons' of a spaceship floating around in your living room?...... sounds immersive! (sarcasm)

VR and AR will each have their place, but for flying/space sims I think VR is the winner...........

You are way under spec OP - Oculus recommends an R9 290 which is over 5x faster than your current card. A 6770 (assuming that's your card) isn't capable of running the game at 75 fps at 1080p on lowest settings, let alone at rift resolution. That Athlon will not be able to reliably hold 75 fps in many games either regardless of your graphics card.

I too have come really close to pulling the trigger on the DK2, mostly because it would have got me access to Eve: Valkyrie, but I just can't justify the cost for something I'll be upgrading in a few months once CV1 lands. My advice would be to save $1500 - that'll end up close to £1200 or more if you're in the UK - and buy a whole new machine (Intel CPU & AMD GPU) for VR.

Oculus recommend using contacts when in the Rift.
Personally, I wear my glasses (I'm slightly short sighted).

In my first few days of setting the Rift up I tried glasses on/off and the A and B lenses. I settled on the A lenses with glasses on.
For me it's not an issue. I can Rift for hours with no problems.
As for DK2 or CV1, I would say that if you can do it go DK2. But be prepared to sink some further cash into it (HOTAS, PC Upgrades).
DK2 is certainly not perfect, the image quality isn't great but I wouldn't swap back to a monitor. No way.

On the flip side, ignorance is bliss. Be patient. Wait until VR has really hit the mainstream so there will be far less fiddling about and a lot more software that is instantly VR enabled, rather than all the half cooked VR projects currently out there.

But if you do get one, you will grin like an idiot. VR ED is a bit special.

Does Elite support the Vive then?

They have officially said that they'll look at each headset on a 'case-by-case' basis and support accordingly.........

Honestly, I couldn't imagine that they would ignore the Vive. It will have a very large following and should be similar enough to Oculus that the adaptation will be relatively easy.

I think their 'case-by-case' statement is a safety net for FD to exclude any extreme technical cases, or devices that have few actual followers.

JMHO.

Definitely wait for the consumer version. Oculus's drivers are still in a very poor shape imo. 3 out of 4 updates i've had to reinstall windows (i7-2600k, 970 SLI, etc).. This last time, I updated from 0.4 to 0.5 to play elite dangerous again with the latest, and upon switching to the rift I kept hearing constant USB connects/disconnects.. after uninstalling and reinstalling to try to fix, a bunch of drivery items got hosed on windows..

System was stable for quite a long time prior to this update.. and a lot of others experience this..

This is a little frustration typing as i'm reinstalling Windows right now -- but wait for the consumer version :)

Yeah you should wait unless you have at least a r9 290 or a gtx970 imho.

It is an amazing experience at that level. I can run everything at medium (some high) with only a few problems (supercruise meh!) actual combat is brilliant ...all the ships buzzing around you hehe :D

In fact i am pleasantly surprised how well i can run Elite considering the stutter people were warning me about beforehand.

But i am really tempted to get a new graphics card (gtx980 ti or Fury X) but am holding off until the Fury appears. It is somewhat low resolution in the rift but VR in low resolution still smashes out of the park uber high resolution on a monitor.

Another problem you will have is that sometimes you have to configure the rift for each individual game/demo you play. At the moment i have mine setup for Elite and i only play that at the moment. Even though i should get back to Alien Isolation (thats awesome in the rift as well :D) Its awfully finicky to get setup sometimes.

Wearing glasses is fine in the rift as you can adjust the lens to be further away.
