I am a complete novice with regard to fleet carriers and am about to purchase one (all my game play has been exploration). I do not understand how to place a BUY ORDER for trttium and have it delivered. I have seen and heard people mention it but cannot find any guides. Is there an idiot's guide available? Thanks

I'd suggest getting your carrier first so you can see the menus yourself. Setting up a buy order is pretty straight forward.
You will open your carrier interface go to the market tab and set it up. I don't think you'll have any issues with that.
You can find the various groups that fuel carriers and put in a fueling request. They'll tell you what to do and what it costs. You do what they say you get loaded.
You can do the open market.
The process is simple step 1 find a nearby station with a large supply of tritium and open docking slots around the same body.
Park close ideally in line of sight of the station.
Now you setup your buy order. Pre colonisation you would setup the price to 20-30k profit over what the station was selling for have a few billion spare if you're loading for deep space.
After colonisation the haulers are busy hauling for profitable rich people. You can try 20-30k but many people are getting 40-100k/t profit trades from colonisation so I suspect you'll need at least 45k/t profit to get loaded fast.
Upload the market data to EDDN. For fast fueling join the various larger Elite discord groups find their trade channel post a trade advert following their rules and wait for loading. The more you pay the faster it goes.
If you're loading yourself you can just transfer your trit to and from the carrier using the ship inventory. This option is not in the carrier menu.
