Buying a second commander

Warning: Numpty questions coming up for the PC version.

My wife is getting interested in playing Elite. However, before we go down the 'spending four figures on a gaming rig, monitor and HOTAS' I figure we should just buy a second commander for my PC to see if she likes it in a long-term capacity. I've suggested she does the Training stuff on my account, but those may not be enough to get a real impression (especially as she won't be interested in combat)

I assume that I just purchase a second copy of Horizons and then I'll get an option to switch to the new login? Or how does it work?

Numpty question 2: Is there a way to check if a commander name is available ahead of time?

You need to buy the new CMDR with a different email address from your existing CMDR. You can then log out of one account and into the other. Controller settings are local, so are maintained.

You'll simply have to log off/re log with the other email adress on the launcher.

Or duplicate the launcher, one for each.

Or if you have Elite as stand-alone and on Steam, they'll each have their launcher, makes it easier.

Err.. you want your wife to get into ED but yo're unsure if she gets sucked in, right? Wouldn't be easier to buy a Sidewinder, swap seats and just let her play on your account for a while? I know those billions of credits may be tempting and initial income insignificant and barely noticeable but you can sit at her side and work as a tutor. Hint a thing or two and then leave her play on her own. Give yourselves a week of time for example and then ask her whether she wants her own account or not.

Sure, there are drawbacks (like necessity to start all over again when on her own account) but I bet you can have some hatch malfunction and drop few tonnes of highly valuable cargo... By accident of course.
