Buying from a fleet carrier, am I doing it wrong?

As title, I'm looking for Meta-Alloy for Felicity without having to do the 300ly, many jump with fuel scoop trip it would take to get to Maia and back, and while Inara says that there are a number of fleet carriers with some for sale nearby (and updated recently) I can't see any on the comodities market of the one I'm at (tried in open and private) despite it saying there's plenty available and being open to all. Do I just keep trying stations or bite the bullet and go to Maia?

You may not even be able to get it at Darnielle's Progress - it is often in a state such that the meta alloy isn't for sale. I'd look for a barnacle site to pick one up.

In a state? As in damaged, or simply so many people buying that you can't get? Though, as I understand it, finding a barnacle requires an SRV?

As in BGS state - not sure which ones affect it (things like infrastructure failure, I should think), but most times I've visited I haven't been able to buy a meta alloy there.

You probably need an SRV to get a barnacle, yes (never tried shooting and scooping it with a ship). But SRVs are cheap.

Yep. SRV bays can be bought at most stations. But your best bet is to go to a Lee Yong Rui station which has 15% off everything - I would recommend: System - Diaguandri, Station - Ray Gateway.

But honestly - play the game and soldier on. Soon enough those 300ly will be nothing when you get better ships and engineering under your belt :)

300lys isn't that far.
And true, but when your unladen jump range is 22ly and laden is about 19ly, still gonna take a while. And would have been nice to find out before arriving that she wanted the alloy, rather than not being told until I'd already docked. So yea, was just hoping to save some time.

Take the trip, play the game.

This.
And yes, I will since it seems I need to anyway, that was exactly the point of asking, but there's nothing wrong with wanting to save time by asking questions on a forum. (While making dinner and currently away from the game anyway before you ask how it's saving time to ask here instead of just getting on with it).

I've been away for a while, remind me what a "BGS" state is? :ROFLMAO:

I bought one meta alloy from Darnielle's Progress midweek. Unless something changed with Thursday's tick, you should be able to, ad well, OP.

Yup, make the trip mate, you can get a load of data too, which will help you rank up with the engineer too.

Oh, and only go to farseer in solo unless you want to get a bit cross with gankers.
Yea, honestly I only play solo/with friends anyway. That's one of the main reasons I prefer this to some of the competition. You got the choice.

Have you got a cargo rack?

there is a FC of CMDr LeKeno in Deciat, called Cutt.ly/Free-Metaalloy for exactly that reason: https://forums.frontier.co.uk/threa...-farseer-inc-deciat-feedback-welcomed.551455/

for my third account i still went to the pleiades - besides barnacles being worth a look, it provides you with the distance from start requirements for a second engineer, elvira martuuk, if you haven't unlocked her.

alternatively you could pick up barnacles from the coalsack. should give you the necessary distance as well, and on the way back you can get the unlock requirements for elvira martuuk from nguuri (which is at the coalssack side of the bubble).

enjoy!
