totally dumb question warning.... can you trade materials with players in elite? I didn't think you could I am having an Admiral Akbar moment here to be honest.

There's materials and materials. Players cannot transfer the "old" (ship engineering) materials.
They can trade the "new" (suit/weapon engineering) materials by just meeting up and dropping stuff on the ground or setting buy/sell orders in their fleet carrier bar.

Not before introduction of Fleet Carrier bars. Trading Odyssey materials is their main purpose.
