Call me crazy, but I'm staying with Elite Dangerous

OK, we've had a run of "I'm leaving Elite Dangerous" threads so just to balance things out, I'm staying. :)

Admittedly there have been disappointments with some updates being underwhelming, but overall I think it still one of the best online multiplayer space games around (and I've tried a few). Bear in mind I play in VR with a decent rig and IMO that makes a big difference to the experience. Some things I really like are:

  • Stella forge and the appearance and "feeling" of space generally.
  • Flight model, probably as good as I've seen in any game.
  • Big space (liked it more when jumping was shorter and could get stuck).
  • Navigation, although could be harder (its much better IMO without all the HUD circles so compass and line of sight only).
  • Procedurally generated planets (since the removal of the beige plague).
  • The inside of the ships, just pretty (Orca is my fav' for sleek and ASP Ex or Type 10 for awesome views).
  • Space stations and in game info, much improved over time. Can actually do stuff.
  • Sound track (or game music packs if you prefer).
  • Roles (more so with the improvements to trading, exploration and mining)
  • P v E, particularly in a threat 6 (like pirate activity). Try it if you haven't already.
  • Engineering since RnGesus was largely nerfed and material traders added.
  • Winging in a Haz Res.
Sure, there's some things I'm not keen on but on a scale of 1 to 10 would probably still give it an 8.

Sometimes I love it, sometimes I hate it. Have been playing, on and off, since Premium Beta back in 2013. Loved some stuff, ignored most of it (I've engineered about three modules - at random based on what I was carrying at the time. Never seen a Thargoid or been to a Guardian site. PVPed for about a week and realised it was an arms race I was not prepared to dedicate my life to. Looked at the PowerPlay Map and sided with no-one. Went to a few combat zones. Did a lot of trading. Did a lot of ferrying people about. Got a Rift and realised it's simply magnificent in VR. Am currently Blazin' (read fizzlin') my own trail, which means putting on the Rift and ferrying a few people about every now and then and wondering why I always seem to end up in the same corner of the Universe.

It boggles my mind that a game with ostensibly nothing to do has gotten 1100 hours of play time out of me. Still climbing, too.

My best guess is that’s still as close as we can get to piloting our own space fighter. At least without sacrificing a child to Chris Roberts...

It's a game I keep coming back to. I've taken a lot of breaks but magically start only playing ED until I get sick of it again. But I love it. I think the hardcore players that treat this game as a second life just get extreme fatigue then become doomsayers.

we've had a run of "I'm leaving Elite Dangerous" threads

Each time I see a new one posted, this song starts running through my head:

Another one bites the dust
Another one bites the dust
And another one gone, and another one gone
Another one bites the dust

:D

On a more serious note though, while I agree some aspects can be improved upon, it doesn't prevent me from loading up ED when I want to (often) and RL allows (less often) and enjoying the game for what it is. I can't think of many other titles (such as the Microsoft Flight Sim line; FS2002, FS2004, FSX, etc.) that have held my interest this consistently and for an extended period of time.

I find any breaks from ED (by choice or otherwise) only makes me appreciate it more when I load it up again.

It's easily one of my favourite games of all time. I can't see myself not playing it for a long time to come, especially when they keep adding new stuff to the game (some good, some not so good). Most of the recent updates have been great and kept me engaged.

Still haven't tried the new mining yet, but it does look fun. Will give it a go when I get back from Beagle Point.

Looking forward to what the future brings.

My lad and I were discussing space games last night. He will not play ED because it's a "Dad" game, ie I play it and it would be very uncool for him to play a game that his dad plays. We went through every space game I could think of and he dismissed all of them, because they were flawed in some fashion. Based on what we discussed he wanted some sort of space combat, trading game between planets. So kind of what ED is!

The hypocrisy in this thread is palpable.
If it's the same people saying they love the game that also agree with those leaving then you may be right but I don't think it is. Some people are bored and give their personal reasons why and that is fair enough. Others love the game and give their reasons why and that is also fair enough. It's a big and diverse community with room for both sides ... unless it's the same people then I fail to see the hypocrisy?
