Call Sign: Last 3 characters, please.

Probably been mentioned before, but just in case...

It'd be nice to have the option for the flight controller to call out the last three alphanumeric characters of the ship ID as opposed to the first, giving the audio options:

CMDR NAME
SHIP NAME
SHIP ID (FIRST)
SHIP ID (LAST)

So for e.g. in the case of CMDR Jameson's Cobra Mk I, JJ-386:

SHIP ID (FIRST): "DELACY JULIET JULIET 3"
SHIP ID (LAST): "DELACY 386"

That is a good point, although it would also imply some "standard" for the ship-IDs. But that is a minor point since only the Cmdrs can hear these communications.

AFAIK all NPC ship IDs are in the XX-XXX format (but not 100%) and I think it's used for player vessels too (until you change it), beginning with the first two letters of your CMDR name.

This format being the default, it'd be nice if it sounded right in the call out.

Whilst CMDRs don't have to conform, obviously, having the option is good either way (even for non-conformist IDs, e.g. A-B.12, 1.AB-C, (A)B12 etc.).

In aviation the abbreviation is normally the first character and the last two.
For example:
I-CGAD: the pilot makes the first contact with the complete registration. The controller then may choose to reply "IAD". Then all communications will be done with only "IAD".

Possibly another option for first character + last 2 then, or maybe it's too much/over complicating things?

I contemplated suggesting the first contact being the full registration (followed by the abbreviation), but thought it might conflict with those using the first 3 characters of their CMDR or ship names (from a developer standpoint, timings and whatnot).

Depends where you are. For the Italian example that you gave, correct -as in the rest of Europe and much of the rest of the world. As usual though, the septics have to be different (and the Canucks along with them).
