Hello,
My name is Keith, and I've been blogging about a variety of things for a few years now. I spent about 5 years writing exclusively about EVE Online and was a member of their thriving (still) blog community. My blog has been inactive, along with my EVE account, for a while now as I cast about looking for something new to write about and get involved with. Elite: Dangerous is it.
Back in the day, a fellow EVE player decided to build a list of his favourite EVE blogs, this became something much bigger which survives to this day. From the EVE Blog Pack grew the EVE Blogosphere, which when I last counted (a few years ago now) there were nigh on 400 blogs (including inactive ones which were archived), nearly half of which were regularly updated. Judging from twitter activity on the #tweetfleet hashtag that number has grown since then.
I'm looking for other Elite playing content creators who have some sort of website (could be a twitch or youtube channel, tool, RP blog, Economic analysis podcast, anything really) so I can start building a list. Then I'll start building a link sharing network, and the conversations can begin.
I've seen the Abraka Drabble thread and while it's great and something we can rightly be proud of, it might not be for everyone. Taking again the EVE Blogoshpere as an example; the sheer variety of content and characters means that there really is pretty much something for everyone. From fiction to analysis, reportage to propaganda, it's all there. This is what I want to find for E
.
I have not come across a game with the potential for deep expansion and exploration (both literal and figurative) since EVE. I started playing that in 2004 and watched it grow and evolve since then, along with the relationship between the developers and the players.
So here's what I'm going to do:
First I'll build a list, probably in a google spreadsheet, of every link submitted in this thread. Just a link is fine, but a bit of blurb would be useful. If you have an RSS feed that would be useful too, but I can find it myself if need be.
Then I'll probably put a bunch of my favourites on a page on my blog and add them to my blogroll.
Let's spread the linky love people ;D
Linking back is not compulsory, but well, you know; its nice to be nice
The long term strategy (if you can have a strategy for herding cats ;D) is to build our own community, and while the forums are great and all...<tinfoil>Frontier can shut a thread down if they don't like what it says</tinfoil>. An independent network, not reliant on the developers for things like hosting, infrastructure, or content. If Frontier want to leverage that as a form of marketing (as CCP have done) then that is up to them, if we are not already beholden to them for what we create then we can decide whether to take them up on their 'help' or not on our own terms.
I know I'm harping on, but ask @CCP_Manifest on twitter how good for EVE the whole 'meta' community has been. There's a reason that EVE is read about by orders of magnitude more people than play it and a large part of it is because there is so damn much writing about it, by a wide variety of people, from a spectrum of perspectives.
What I'm proposing, could become something like that for Elite. I'm not going to force it though, we'll see what happens
I'm considering running some sort of regular events, possibly one for each content type or one that can cross over. Watch the blog (and forums, obv.) for any announcements. Suggestions welcome.
My blog is here: http://keithneilson.co.uk, throw me a link below. Lets see where this goes.
