Hardware & Technical Calling Warthog HOTAS Users - Yaw / Roll ?

Hello CMDRS.

Recently got the Warthog, the stick doesn't twist for yaw. I have read that you can get pedals (not for me) OR change the 'Yaw on Roll' control settings. Trying to figure out if the controller will work for me or if I will return.

I have tried to setup the 'Yaw on Roll' control options following a few very general comments made by others but haven't had success.

How have you tackled the yaw issue? IF you have can you provide details as to how?

I know some people do not use yaw at all, alas I am not that good of a flyer I guess. [blah]

Thanks Cmdrs! Much appreciated.

Bind yaw to a hat switch. Yaw is so slow you don't gain much by having it be analogue. Plus with yaw on initial roll enabled you shouldn't need yaw to help aiming that much so it only comes into play when landing.

Thanks Mike much appreciated. I'm not in front of the game at the moment (wish I was) but I assume there is a control setting for 'Yaw on initial roll' and once enabled I would then bind yaw left and right to a hat switch? I believe the setting is called 'Yaw into roll' on the UI.

Please let me know if I am correct.

If you may be returning the stick it might be better to get a HOTAS with twist as it's very natural once you get used to it.

Thanks avow555.

I am attempting to move from the x55 to the Warthog. The x55 has build quality issues, I have three buttons/switches that no longer work on the throttle. Otherwise I really like the setup it offers. It appears they are launching a new x56 at the end of May. When recently contacting then about getting the x55 replaced, they mentioned they would have no replacement units until May because they are using a new manufacturer. My guess is they switched because of overall quality.

Ah sorry to hear of your X55 woes, the very reason I never bought one and am trucking on with my 7 year old X52pro.
Interesting to hear the X56 is being manufactured at a new location, that may encourage me to buy one of these new sticks.
I paticularly like the 2 mini sticks they have incorporated into the design, fingers crossed the quality will be up to scratch.

I have a Warthog and MFG Crosswind pedals.

If I'm just tooling about and don't need precision control, for instance when I'm just taking my time exploring in supercruise, I have the "Yaw to roll" option mapped to the lever at at the base of the stick, so as long as it is held it down I can yaw with a horizontal movement on the stick.

When I want to fly properly I use the pedals.

Frankly I can't imagine not having analogue yaw. Get pedals. You won't regret it.

My Warthog is gathering dust as I never overcame this problem. I first tried CH pedals, and I just didn't get on with them. Maybe I could get used to it with practice but I couldn't get my hand feet coordination sorted. I'm also rubbish at drums on rock band. Next I tried mapping it to the nipple on the throttle which was better, but still didn't feel as intuitive as twist. So I'm still using a worn out Fly 5 with two broken buttons and a tendency to roll full right without warning...

In general use, you're 100% right. The only benefits I've found are that it frees up a thumb and a hatswitch; and the precision of analogue pedals is useful when aiming fixed weapons.

I have no room for pedals and use the front hat of the throttle for coarse yaw and the pinky of the joystick for yaw into roll

If you can afford a Warthog, you can buy yourself Some MFG-Crosswind pedals.

You got one then? How does it feel? The thing I disliked most about the CH Pedals was the lack of feel from them. I never felt confident I was back in centre position after making an action. I think I would like a stronger return force and maybe some kind of feedback when in the centre position.

Crosswinds are fully adjustable and is supplied with 2 different cams to give different curves. They are expensive but pure quality absolutely no slop/slack or wobble. If you dont like them I bet you could get MORE than your money back as there is a waiting list.

That's down to the cams - on the Crosswind the default cam has a noticeable centre detent, so it's easy to find the centre fairly accurately. I found it a bit annoying after a while though, if you're yawing left and right (such as when 'strafing' fixed weapons in ED) there's too much of a 'bump' in the middle for my liking. I switched to the alternate cam which is much smoother and doesn't have the same centre detent.

You can dial the return force up quite a bit just by turning a wheel which increases tension on the (hefty) spring.

I love the Slaw Devices, just sold my 109 pedals and ordred the Viper pedals.
