Callsigns Disappointment

I couldn't decide which was the right forum for this subject (often the case - nothing seems to fit).

I was really disappointed with FDev's decision to change the way the control stations call us in the game. It used to be that you would be called by whatever you put in the ID slot in the outfitting UI. Now it's the first three characters of your Commander name, which makes no sense to me at all. The only way we can change it now, from what just doesn't make sense, is to reset and change commander name.

Up to Chapter 4, I had been using my amateur radio callsign suffix as my ID. It was very familiar, and gave it that personal touch. I recently bought a second profile and used my amateur radio callsign as my commander name, and as usual, put my suffix into the ID, but no - it is now the first three characters and sounds pretty dumb.

I went to the store and saw that ID plates could be purchased and on reading the detail, it seemed to be saying that it would, on occasion, be used to call me. But no - it isn't the case.
By the time I found out, I'd done too much and got too far to reset and start with my suffix as commander name. Why they decided to change it, I really can't comprehend. "Ah, there's something people can personalise without resetting, let's take it away from them!"
Really?

There should be an option (I think in the audio settings) to choose first three characters of commander name, ship name, or ship ID.

It was there last time I looked, but if it disappeared in 3.3.03 or something fair enough - though I would guess a bug rather than intentional, if that's the case.

You've got it backward. For years it was the first 3 letters of your name in the phonetic alphabet. Only recently did they add the option for it to be ship ID.

My only disappointment is that it doesn't just read all 6 characters. But this game is so massively broken these days I have more important things to be disappointed about.

Didn't get it backwards - really strange you should say that - last year I was using my ID in this way practically all year. Now it's 1st 3 commander name characters. How would I mix that up? Besides being a class 1 army trained radio op and a civvy radio tech, I would have to be pretty simple to get that wrong.

I'll look in options, but so far I've not seen it. I'm guessing that's options UI from the main menu - so that's where I'll look. Can't imagine a bug being responsible as my original profile is behaving the same way.

Thanks to those making pratty responses, btw ;)

They say that because it's true. It's never been anything but Commander name for me, because I've never changed it. Only 3.0 added the ability to change it to Ship ID/Ship Name.
Speaking of...

Audio-> Voice Volume -> Callsign.

Thanks for that. I went and had a look in audio when I played this evening, but couldn't see that option - it's difficult to expand the options in VR (wish FD would do something about that - as well as the Galaxy Map in VR) so I was unable to see it. I'll do it in desktop mode.

I had just found the announcement prior to coming back to the thread (which is dated January last year - so I was, as I said, using it all last year and therefore am not crazy and it ain't true that it was available all the time ;) you lot are confusing me anyway - it was ID from last year, January, which is exactly what I said, so I don't know why there's a discussion on what is true and what isn't):

I also would like to have read the whole 6 letters of the ship ID. Just as JD, I like to use an Amateur Radio Callsign (making the Permit right now) . I place it on every ship I got. It consists BTW of the first 3 letters of my Cmdr name (GOR). So it is disappointing to decide between the first 3 of the Cmdr name or the callsign OE6GOR. In Austria we say, it is "not fish, not meat". Meaning it is only a half solution.

Best regards, Gorrister
