Camera Head Shake, an Alternative Fix

I know FD doesn’t want to remove the camera shake as it would remove the simulation of the ships vibration caused by the thrusters. So how about a compromise?

It is completely fine if our ships shake, however, the problem is that our eye focal points shake because the whole screen shakes thus making it hard for some folks to focus, and for other it causes motion sickness.

So why not keep the ship shake, but reduce or remove the background shakes so everything will stay in focus? So for an example, you are taking off from a station and start to engage thrusters, the ship shakes in response, and what you see is the ships cockpit shaking but the station in the background remains smooth allowing for better focus on the environment.

If you are on a really bumpy road, your vision remains constant, your body and head may move but your focal point doesn’t shake. I have flown many flight sim type of games, and can attest that head shaking if done right doesn’t cause the player to lose focus.

What do you all think? Sound fair? Would it work?

I don’t suffer from motion sickness but I find the shaking gives me eye fatigue after a while especially when there is a lot of takeoff and landings. I use TrackIR and no it doesn’t alleviate the shaking.

I hope you guys will give this some consideration!

Regards,
Arjin

The last few days I've been playing in 21:9 aspect ratio (1920x810) and I've noticed that the shake is less apparent than when I used to play in 16:9 (1920x1080). I can't explain why, perhaps it's because your FOV is greater. Not really a solution to the problem but might help those that suffer from motion sickness.

Interesting, I play on 1920x1080 and have tried max FOV and such with little difference. Never thought of a different resolution, but I am hoping for a fix instead of yet another workaround. Will try messing around with different resolutions thanks!

Your avatar looks like he is looking at your sig btw... lol *hungry*

I hope this isn't viewed as a whine, just a simple compromise maybe I am gettin old and can't focus like I used even though my monitor screen is crystal clear.

Yes I'll take some cheese if so viewed.. :D

this is what I posted in another thread - i would say lot of it is related :) >>> https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=156334&page=2&p=2507753#post2507753

The shaking effect really depends on FoV. With single very small monitor it is very nice feature, it adds greatly to the realism and you'll hardly notice it - absolutely fantastic addon. But as the size of the screen grows the effect is less enjoyable and goes from annoying to dangerous to health (it can go as far as nausea, severe eye fatigue and problems with focus and balance = the official term is simulator sickness https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Simulator_sickness and virtual reality sickness https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Virtual_reality_sickness - and it can be quite serious) as for VR - it can be even 3 monitor setup.

as for the argument it levels the playing field - it gives small screen owners huge advantage over anybody with bigger screen because not only thy have everything in very narrow field of view and the shaking is almost unnoticeable but with big or multiple screens the shakes and head bobbing effect grows with square law so it's way more severe.

Anyways - everybody got different equipment and more over oculusers already go the privilege granted so that renders the whole question of leveling the playing field completely moot. (I would say playing with keyboard vs playing with joystick will make far more impact than the shakes and bobs :).

Having some sort of control over the effects would allow more people get into elite bit more - the cockpit building community is taking to elite quite well and this could be major spanner in a wheels.

As for oculus suggestions -I imagine for majority of people it is not an option - this is a platform that is far more suited for consoles like Xbox where it would be absolutely great addon, fantastic improvement and particulary suited for the type of customers and type of gaming).

I've asked in technical forum so fingers crossed :) https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=164406
