Can a Faction be Destroyed/Eliminated?

Playing ED can be a joy - if - one has an achievable goal.

A thread in the lore/role play forum triggered what I thought would be an interesting goal - wiping out commies!

Now - I know how to bring a faction's influence in a system down to 1%. Not that hard, really. Kill every faction ship of the targeted faction you run into with a bounty on it (and those that don't if you don't mind getting one yourself). Eventually they'll go hostile on you and and you can kill the ships they send after you. Additionally you can troll their ships by loading up a ton or two of cargo and hanging out in RES HIGH or HAZ (though I don't recommend doing that in a HAZ) and they shoot first thus giving you free reign to kill the bountiless ships without getting a bounty yourself (The first time I ever targeted a faction I discovered that the closer you get to hostile without getting their that the faction ships will avoid you - or at least that was the impression I got - lots of times when I'd run into one in an RES and scan it they'd beat feet out of the area and jump out). Of course it won't just be the targeted faction jumpin' ya in the RES if you've got cargo in their but hey - it ain't called Elite DANGEROUS for giggles. Just as important (probably more so depending on your temperament and play style) is running missions for every other faction in the system (easier now with the 3, 4 and 5 plus sign influence missions) and don't run any for the targeted faction. Increasing their influence reduces the relative influence of the targeted faction.

But - 1% influence is not the same as eliminating the faction. Once I even helped the faction I wanted to eliminate to bring it's influence up enough that a civil war ensued (I think it was me that caused that) but losing the war didn't eliminate the faction either.

So - can a faction be eliminated - wiped out - removed completely from a system? If so - HOW?

Im pretty sure a faction cant be completely eliminated but if they expanded into the system from another system you can make them retreat from it once there below 2% for a few days

I'm no BGS expert but my understanding is that no faction can be entirely wiped out, but potentially it could be reduced to having a presence in a single port (includes outposts and ground bases) in it's home system

Less even, they can actually lose all assets. But they cannot disappear.

Yeah, since it requires manual intervention to add factions to the game, I'm guessing the only way to remove them is to have the hand-of-god intervene to remove one.

Kinda sad that they can't make this fully dynamic.
They could always avoid key factions getting removed by creating a growing NPC response that would positively affect the BGS in their favor.

Sadly, I doubt we'll ever see stuff like that. Will likely forever be manual dev changes and server ticks. :(

A bit off topic but slightly related: is the state of retreat irreversible, no matter how healthy that MF might look currently (like far above this 2% threshold and in boom state for instance)?

Retreat can be prevented whilst active. But once it happens, in order to recover back to the same system would require expansion. (see Jane's BGS threads for the answers)

I did plan on pitching a couple CGs which would start with amassing a collection of armaments and some escalating combat before finishing in a conflict CG where the results would either be the complete elimination of a fairly unimportant NPC faction, or the loss of control of several systems to the faction targeted for elimination.

But well.... lets just say my experience of getting CGs actioned suggests the heat death of the universe would occur before that series of CGs would resolve :/
