Can animals drown?

So I’m too broke to buy all the species in franchise mode and test them myself, and not all species are available on campaign mode, so:

Can animals drown?

If I build my pond too deep, or build a moat around an island, will my animals walk in and drown, or are they smart enough to avoid the deep water?

I have a lot of designs drawn up but I don’t want to put in null fences only to have my chimps wade out of their depth, or baby ostriches get in over their heads in a drinking pond.

It may be possible that animals get stuck in the water without a means of getting out. One of my warthogs got stuck in the water and didn’t move anymore. I just left it and thought it would come out eventually. Unfortunately after a while the animal died.

Oh no! Thanks, that answers my question. I’ll grab some warthogs and test whether a line of rocks before the drop off keeps them safe!

Warthogs can swim in game so unless they get somehow stuck in texture you should be fine. Mine have access to pond and they use it to both drinking and swimming.

@YannHom I just tested this in game and you’re right, my warthogs swam into the deep area and back out again with no issues. Will rest with ostriches and lemurs soon.

I think the ostriches and lemurs won't even go into the water. They will just drink at the shore.

The Ostriches only enter the water where it is safe for them to stand.
I have a savannah area with a stream through the middle, pretty deep as well. But at one point it is shallow water. The Ostriches use that area to cross to the other side.

You can check with the Traversable area hotmap to see if animals can pass certain areas.

Also for anyone who might be concerned about other animals:

Sable antelope: swimmers
Springbok: don't swim
Pronghorns: I've seen only younglings go into water.

Okay, now I feel like an idiot, but I was reading some threads in Off-topic and suddenly jumped here without realizing I'm in PZ section. I read the first couple of posts, totally horrified until I realized you're talking IN GAME.

I think I've seen adult pronghorn swim as well! Would also be a little strange for them to not be able to swim since they have to cross rivers in their irl migration routes :)
