Can anybody sum up the multiplayer aspect for me?

Does anybody know if they plan to add at least player trading? I was privately sent a link summing it up by someone, and I'm not too keen on just buying up cargo and dumping it into space for my partner to tediously collect and resell, just to share profits from cooperative work.

If you can find each other you can
You can shoot one another.
Watch each other do stuff.
Pirate together (sharing loot).
Bounty hunt together (competing for bounties).
Trading together.
Mining together.
Smuggle together.
Fight in combat zones together.
Explore together (taking turns to scan?).

This is the age old sentiment of you could do stuff together with your friends malarkey, but it does not actually mean it is better gameplay wise. You could do this stuff together with complete strangers as well without it adding to the experience of the gameplay. The only thing that will makes it better, is the fact that you are doing it together with your friends. That is not a feature....

There needs to be a proper multiplayer feature, not some features that has you tag along your buddies in space. Coop missions for instance, where one escorts the other? Where one has to sacrifice guns for cargo space and the charge rate of his FSD is severely hampered, so his buddies has to protect him through space for loads of credits if and when the mission is a success? That would make an interesting mission... Or the other way around where your buddies has to stop a cargo run and you all jump in together and there is a massive fight... That is just of the top of my head, I am sure FD can think of way more interesting missions than I can if they just rub their two brain cells together for long enough like I have ;)
The fact that you have friends is not a feature that FD is providing, that is something FD is supposed to take advantage of in multiplayer to make it more interesting to play multiplayer. Everything you do is more fun with friends, except fapping, that kinda gets awkward...

I think they said something in Newsletter 49 that it was coming

So while I kinda know the answer I would give to this question I was wondering what you guys would say. A few friends of mine are thinking of getting this game. I've tried to explain what it's all about which of course leads to more questions. One common question is 'so we both log in, what can we actually do together?'

What would you guys say?
Nothing. This game is not (at the moment) an MMO. It's a massive single player online.

If you want a game like X3 (but simplified and with half of its features) in a universe influenced by the actions of people around the world, jump in. But you won't play it with friends; not in a satisfying way. Sitting with 2 friends around the same pc and commenting the gameplay is actually more funny than playing multiplayer, at the moment.

That's a bit of an exaggeration, but the MP features are severely lacking. As I said in my initial post, you can reliably play with friends in open mode. However, what you can do together is extremely limited and requires the use of external comms. In a lot of ways the game feels like they were going to make an MMO, but then after laying the foundation of it (instances, online only and so on) they changed their minds and went for a SP experience instead. Thus players share the same space and can technically work together, but the game offers no features to support it. So it's either a broken MMO or a really badly thought out SP game. I don't know which and I'm not convinced anyone on the dev team knows either. It's still fun, but it is very frustrating at the same time.

From what I've read, some can play reliably with friends and others can't. It's likely the peer-to-peer nature of the MP experience that is not rock solid (and is really hard to get right due to all the small differences in how people access the internet).

Connection is no longer a problem for the 90% of the population. This game is "multiplayer": there are other players around you. This doesn't mean you can play with them or share anything. They all play individually and influence the universe together. That's all! No coop, no groups, no guilds, no group content, no sharing, no chat, no no no

Those are features for other games. Elite is not an MMORPG. It will never be. Did you actually hear Braben sayin something about social tools? Nope. We have a thread speaking of many things. And many of those things have been deleted from the "to do list", as Braben has stated.

Updated note: I will be playing with my girlfriend now
(don't go too nuts on that sentence)

We are looking at ways to making our Elite time more exciting and we do see certain tools are in need.

From www.elitedangerous.com as of my typiing this:
Website title: "Elite: Dangerous Official Game Site | Epic multiplayer space adventure"

From the 3 description paragraphs about the game on the very first page:
"It's an awe inspiring, beautiful, vast place with breath-taking scope and freedom that creates an epic multiplayer experience with you at the centre of the action."
"Take a ship and trade, bounty-hunt, pirate and assassinate your way across the galaxy. Breath-taking scope and freedom creates an epic multiplayer experience with you at the centre of the action."
"Elite: Dangerous lets you team up in multiplayer, with friends or fly solo as you blaze your own trail through this epic galaxy."

And yet you claim the game doesn't imply it's an MMO of some sort? It couldn't be more obvious what the game advertises itself as. There is no room for reasonable interpretation.

I would sure like to know how you "team up in multiplayer" ;)

Does that just simply mean, "team up with your friends in multiplayer by using a third party VOIP service to plan every jump together, but jump separately to the target system, because reasons, except if you are interdicted, then you might have a hard time working together." I see that might have a slightly less catchy ring to it... Blaze your own trail yay!

Team up with our imaginary team up button today, your team will be held together by invisible string-cheese also known as string theory!

Atm multiplayer is meaningless, partially broken and lacking features.
- Matchmaking in open play seems mostly arbitrary (there are some influencing factors like friends list and latency but not guarantees)
- Team play/co-op features are not yet implemented (Called 'wings', should can in 'early' 2015)
- comms/social tools are poor and still to come in the future

Hence, come back in 6 months and see how it panned out.

at the moment this is the way multiplayer works. improvements are on the way early next year apparently. there's patches almost daily, hopefully multiplayer is the top priority at the moment. after all David Braben has always talked about "getting the house built, before furnishing it" i would say that multiplayer is part of the foundations, if it's not fixed there's a good chance of subsidence :(

I remember seeing Kerrash demo at the launch party, this is now used in game at certain systems, the cap ship jumps in, if you hit all the heat sinks it will jump out, and can be repeated over and over.
In that demo Kerrash called in some friends to join the attack, now most people find this impossible, some claim to play with friends ok.
I would love to see Kerrash do this demo again, but on his live stream for real as proof it is possible.
I have tried a few times to connect up with a specific person, and never have been able to acheive it.

Sum up of the multiplayer aspect of the game: if you want you can!

It' a coop against a capital ship in open play by 4 friends (audio is in french sorry) but it shows 3 friends attacking the capital ship while the 4th record the fight (pov of the video).
It also show supercruise jumping with friends.
Also, always worked "ok" (sometimes less ok) for me to play with people in open play
