Can anyone recomend a HOTAS for EliteD?

I just want a cheap(ish) HOTAS for Elite, can anyone recommend one that is compatible and works well? I have no interest in flight sims or anything else like that so it doesn't have to be the best, just something that works. Thanks.

Literally just bought a new PC and began playing ED last night. Couldn't play with mouse and keyboard - I'm rubbish. So today my Thrustmaster T Flight X HOTAS came in the post and it's fantastic. I've never used a HOTAS before, so this is my first one, but at less than £40 in the UK, its a bargain.

I believe that more expensive, refined versions have amongst other things, a lot more buttons, meaning you don't have to use the keyboard for extra functions, but I've been really happy with my setup today.

Hope that helps. Bear in mind that you can change the settings very easily to set up the buttons how you want them. Frontier have done a great job and there's TM T Flight X presets on there already, but it's so easy to customise.

Happy flying!

I second the t flight hotas x.

I may upgrade to the x52 at a later date, but the t flight does all I could wish for at an amazing price.

Combine it with the free roccat power grid software on a tablet or smart phone and you are all good.

Bought for £34 new.

Personally I fly with the Saitek X52 pro. Its great for all sorts of flight sims as it is a HOTAS configuration. There is great customization for advanced profilers, but if you are not familiar with all of that Elite does a decent job with the default control scheme for the stick. The only con to the stick is that the centering spring is really weak, and takes some "getting used to." All in all it is a great stick for both beginners and intermediates alike.

To me less than $100 is the not high price category. Two ways you can go if you want to spend less than $100:

1.) Get the Tflight Hotas. It's like $50 max and you can get it cheaper used. It does the trick and what I do is I split the throttle and flight controller and put a small keyboard in between to use for hotkeys. I have to let go of the throttle to get to the hotkeys though.

2.) Get a used x-52 pro. You can get them for less than $100 used. They have a standard x-52 but they are about the same price used so might as well go pro.

I would go cheap on the joystick and get a trackir. The biggest pain in combat is having to use your radar only to keep track of the bogey.

I upgraded from a T Flight HOTAS X to a X52 Pro. I really liked the T Flight, but it had too few buttons and switches for my taste.

Another T-Flight user, works very well with Elite although the stick feels cumbersome at times.
If you find the number of buttons restrictive you can leave one (or more) buttons on the throttle unbound and use it as a modifier.

Good day Commander,

Currently I am using a T.Flight Hotas X Thrustmaster and I am very pleased. Nice stability and performance, great deal of rebindable keys, compatible with PC and PS3, etc... I have bought it for a flight sim, but it works perfectly with Elite: Dangerous.

As far as I can recall, it wasn't expensive at all (don't ask how much, I honestly don't remember). It's a great deal for the price.

Look around on the Internet for the price, not sure what your local currency is, so I can't help with that.

Good luck and have fun!

Cheers,

How do you set up the modifier button when assigning in the game menu? I tried to do it with button 8 (I think) but couldn't get it to work. Maybe it had already been bound...

When the controller options are in the waiting for input state simply hold down two or three buttons together. It'll record when you then let go of them all. Should say in the box something like "JOY 1 + JOY 2".

ok, I have it now! what bindings are you other thrustmaster flight hotas x owners setting for the left/right/forward/backward of the main joystick? and what about the left/right twist?

I'm not a flight sim person so not sure what to choose from all these yaw/rotate options in order to get the most intuitive flying...

Yup, me too!

T-Flight Hotas-X here too!

Is OK for the price.
It broke twice in the first month though.
I pushed button 5 too hard and the sub-assembly plastic mounting just sheared off inside the handle.

Superglue failed to fix it permanently so there is now a wedge holding the PCB in place.

Hopefully it will be OK.

You only get what you pay for.

Good evening Commander,

I shall try and explain it as simple as possible:
-Forward/Backward => controls your pitch (nose down or up)
-Left/Right => controls your roll ("barrel roll" move)
-Twist => controls your yaw (points the nose to desired direction)

Please refer to the following link to help you bind your keys properly (ofcourse, it's all up to you, but I use the same set-up and I am very pleased):

http://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=16140&highlight=technome

PS: When binding your controls to your joystick, try not to bind the movement functions separatly. There is an option which lets you bind the axis to the movement of the joystick, which allows for a much more smoother control. Each movement (pitch, roll, yaw, etc...) has a separate axis. That's the option you should choose.
