Newcomer / Intro Can cargo be stored?

If I put a ship into storage, does the cargo go with it, or do the cargo bays have to be empty?

Is there any other way of storing cargo for a later day? I have a spare ton of Meta-Alloys that I have no use for. Is my only option to sell it and go get another if I need one?

I've seen an answer to this question from 2020 saying that the ship that you transfer to gets the cargo from the old but I don't know if things have changed since then.

I guess if you could store a ship with its cargo, then you could use the transfer function to safely move large valuable cargos and that would be a bit of a sploit.

The only way to actually store cargo is via a fleet carrier, which allows you to store arbitrary goods in its hold... for only the low low price of five billion credits, plus millions per week in upkeep.

If I remember correctly, when switching ships, you can take the cargo with you into the new ship so long as it has enough cargo space. Otherwise, you'll have to sell or get rid of enough cargo until it does fit.

Cargo stays with the ship, and if you change ship the cargo transfers to the new ship. If there is insufficient cargo space then you cannot transfer ships.

The obvious, but expensive option, is to buy a carrier or sell cargo to a friend who will hold it for you.

Space is big, but space stations are small. It has been suggested to allow players to rent warehousing space, but in the end they came up with fleet carriers being allowed to hold cargo instead.

It's a shame we can't stick a few shipping containers on a deserted planet, but some nasty freelancer would just come along and raid them, I suppose.

I'd mistake them for larceny mission instances and plunder them mercilessly :D

It does make you wonder how successful "hiding" caches in the wilderness actually is, given they show up on any ship's surface scans. Or are there some which don't show up? I know with crash sites, you used to be able to find some procedurally-generated when just driving an SRV randomly around a planet... ditto with downed satellites, beacons and even some small installations. Do those still exist or is everything a POI detectable from orbit, now?
