Can Expansion ships be played in the base game?

I have trouble running Horizons (integrated graphics.) But, I can get into the game enough to do basic things, it's just too stuttery to be playable.

I wanted to buy the Alliance Chieftan (expansion ship) and sell my other two to outfit it, but I'm afraid if I buy it and go to the base game I won't have a playable ship! I tried searching around Google for the answer, but wasn't able to find someone trying the same thing.

This seems like a thing you can test yourself ;)

I'm currently far from dock and haven't loaded the base game for a long time but my understanding is that it's owning the license for Horizons that gets you access to the ships, not the actual version of the game you load up.

Certainly you can fly a Horizons ship in the base game but I'm not in a position to confirm you can buy one.

Thanks! that was all I needed to know. I've been on a long layoff from this game so I had no idea.

Basically, it worked (buying the ship in Horizons, playing it in base.) I think there may be an issue where if you go check the shipyard at a station in Base you won't see the Horizon ships, right? So, restarting in Horizons maintained that shipyard (without the prospective ship.) So, I just switched from solo to open and was able to purchase the ship.

You can't know how happy I am this worked because there is so few ships to choose from with my pocketbook, the Alliance Chieftan was perfect and g*d does it beat switching from my Vulture (a turret incidentally fitted with an engine and insufficient power) and a Type-7 (a mining elephant that dies from mice.) Wow, this thing is so much nicer to fight in.
